Medical bullshit (pinched a nerve?)

(Anonymous) 2026-04-24 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
A few days ago my hand fell asleep while leaning on a chair and my thumb, index, and middle finger have felt kinda numb and tingly since then. There's still some sensation, it's not painful or swollen, and I can still move my fingers, but I have reduced grip strength, especially on the index finger.

I googled it and it sounds a lot like median nerve neurapraxia, which is annoying and may take a while to heal, but doesn't seem too serious. I AM planning to talk to a real doctor as soon as I can get an appointment, but I'm getting anxious about this and I'd appreciate knowing if anyone has experienced anything like this or has advice or reassurances or anything?

I used to lean on my elbow a lot and ended up with some numbness in my hand. At the time I was regularly seeing a neurologist anyway for a different issue and I brought it up to him and due to where the numbness was and my elbow leaning habit he told me I pinched a nerve and I should stop doing that (or at least if I did for some reason I put something under my elbow to cushion it instead of the hard desk surface). It took a few days but it did resolve. I try to be cognizant of when I start leaning too much so it doesn't happen again. :)

Thanks, it's nice to hear that this kinda thing isn't necessarily a serious problem!

I've definitely had similar things, it's not really a big deal. I'd look into seeing someone who specializes in Active Release Technique (https://activerelease.com/patients/), who will most likely be a physical therapist, massage therapist or chiropractor. And I know, I know, the internet as a whole seems to hate chiropractors, and there ARE definitely a lot of scummy/scammy ones out there, but there are good, ethical ones too, and the ones who focus more on muscle work (like Active Release) rather than adjustments (cracking vertebrae) can be helpful.

I see one on a regular basis who does this (I sit a lot and am constantly having similar issues) and he helps a lot. He does Active Release, something called NeuroKinetic Therapy (https://neurokinetictherapy.com/), and is certified in exercise rehab (he gives you exercises to do at home) and doesn't do the cracking thing unless someone specifically requests it - functionally/in practice he's more like a physical therapist than a chiropractor even though that's technically what his degree is.

If you can find a good ART provider (and one who does NKT and/or exercise rehab would be a bonus) I think that would be more helpful than anything else. If you go to https://activerelease.com/patients/find-a-provider/ and put in your zip code, it will list ones in your area. The more icons they have next to their name, the more specific certifications they've taken, and, at least in theory, the better they should be. But at minimum, look for one who's taken the Nerve Certification (there's a key at the top of the page that lists the icons, it's the fourth one in the list).

Anyway, that's just my $0.02 and what I'd do in your position.

Yeah, that's not unusual with pinched nerves. If your finger goes dark purple or white, or gets swollen, throbs painfully, or you can't feel it at all, then seek care immediately.
