(Anonymous) 2026-04-24 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)Since I haven't read more than a few chapters of HP, I can't say exactly how many itches this book will scratch, but I love Howl's Moving Castle. It seems to have a few key elements in common, like a protagonist seemingly confined to a lifetime of monotony having their life changed due to magic, and a lot of neat worldbuilding around said magic.

I think it’s hard to actually replace something that really resonated for you at a particular time in your life.
But I hope you find something to get excited about in a similar way.
(My favourite magic system is probably from the Rivers of London books. I like the way they do the whole process of learning magic, as well as the way it interacts with science/tech, and the wider mythology too. Not quite as whimsical as HP, perhaps. And much more about adults than about kids.)

(Anonymous) 2026-04-25 05:15 am (UTC)(link)nayrt but I feel like this is the part that so many people are missing. Sometimes a piece of media hits just the right way for whatever reason, and another piece of media just being similar won't scratch that itch the same way.
