This retconning of history is getting seriously old.

Yes, JKR is a horrible, monstrous person doing immeasurable harm with the profits she makes from this franchise. No, her behaviour is not and should not be excusable or justified in any way. Yes, this has irreparably tainted the HP franchise.

But that does not change the fact that, whatever you may retroactively think of their quality based on your feelings about their author, those books damn near single-handedly got an entire generation of kids and teens excited about reading. For years.

That is not something you can simply erase with your self-righteous "JKR sucks and it makes me feel morally superior to claim her books were always worthless poorly written trash" bullshit.

I think a lot of people were just bitter about being the kids/teens who didn't like the books, and now they're doing a Revenge of the Nerds by coming back and saying, "see? We knew they were trash!"

Good for you. It really sucks for those of us who loved the books.

I'm not rewriting history when I say Joanne was always a mid-level writer, at best, who danced on the edge of misogyny and racism with her work, but got away with it because one day a bunch of kids who wouldn't know a good book if it bit them decided Harry Potter was "OH MY GAWD, NEW AND ORIGINAL!" and their parents were just happy their kids were reading 'something.'

The only thing Joanne really did was win the best-timing lottery ever award.

I get what you're saying (I don't even disagree! I think JKR is a hack!) but... what books do you expect kids to be reading? Like, I think HP fans need to get over themselves but you sound like a weirdo for harping over how kids in 1999 should've had better taste in books... somehow...

I am a weirdo. And a reading snob. When I was the same age as the average reader of Harry Potter, I was reading and comprehending at a college level. Which balanced out how much I sucked at fractions.

What I expected was for the kids to like what they liked, because that's what they do. That's what they've always done. Nothing's going to change that.

But I also expected the adults in the room to keep a firmer grip on reality. Instead, they allowed their children to confuse Joanne's writing with some grand work of genius. And then when those kids grew up, they held on to that delusion to make themselves feel better about their poor taste in reading as youths.

Odd. I've never met a single adult who pretended HP was genius writing, and it's weird that you think that having an interest in the series means the reader believes just that.

It just sounds like you HATE that anyone ever enjoyed the series and had good memories of it. Like, kudos to you for being a fucking Einstein, too cool and too smart for books aimed at stupid 10-year-olds. But why are you trying to invalidate people's experiences of the series? It's one thing to encourage people to read something else now and stop giving Rowling money and attention, that I understand. But telling people that their younger selves were wrong for enjoying a book series? You need to get a fucking grip.

I was gonna say, where is AYRT meeting all of these adults who think that HP is genius writing? Because I sure haven't run into more than one or two. Most of them readily admit that the writing wasn't amazing, but it was fun.

Oh, I had to listen to way too many adults glaze the shit out of Joanne and Harry Potter back in the day, and as a bona fide hater of the bitch, my memories of that era are very clear. People were likening her to fucking Tolkien and King because she sold the most books eva! It still sickens me that she even got to sit on the same stage as some of the greatest writers alive.

And I don't hate the people who enjoyed Harry Potter, but I look down on them.

There were loads of kids books available from the local library for me in the 90’s, the Chronicles of Narnia The Worst Witch, the many Jaqueline Wilson books, Percy Jackson, Artemis Fowl, Animorphs, The Hobbit, and loads more I can’t remember is didn’t know about.

You’re acting like there was slim pickings when magical children’s media has been a huge genre for a long time.

Did you miss the memo that I'm not even a HP fan... Nothing about my post said there were no other options. It's just that some kids latched onto it because they were kids and something about HP spoke to them. Pokemon Red wasn't a great game and I latched onto it because I was a kid.

And you're acting as if HP actually WAS the only book children read which is really dumb. I read a lot as a kid. I read Harry Potter and liked it (until book 4, which is when I dropped it). I also read objectively better books. The thing that I liked about HP was the mix of boarding school story (which I loved because of growing up with Enid Blyton books) plus magic which was a fairly unique genre mashup at the time and it tickled a lot of kid's brains the right way. That doesn't mean this was the only thing we ever read.
