Harry Potter was always low effort trash. I've never understood why so many people were suckered into thinking it wasn't.

(Anonymous) 2026-04-24 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, first of all, no, it's not "low effort trash" just because better things exist or because they were kids' books, etc.

Second, your personal disdain for the series does not necessarily mean anyone was "suckered" into thinking highly of it.

Whenever I see secrets like these, I just wonder if the OP just wants to punish everyone for ever resonating with a series because the author just happened to reveal herself as a piece of shit.

"Well, first of all, no, it's not "low effort trash" just because better things exist or because they were kids' books, etc."

Cho Chang.

That is my answer to that.

Oh, well, as long as one name has the power to singlehandedly drag down the entire franchise with it, let's just shit on all of our memories and psychologically scourge our younger selves for daring to enjoy a story.

(Anonymous) 2026-04-25 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Hope you call a huge part of non-English media (especially Japanese) low level trash as well because dear Lord, some of the names in those...

(Anonymous) 2026-04-24 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like we get this same sentiment, slightly reworded, every few weeks.

(Anonymous) 2026-04-24 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, to be fair, as annoying as the secret is, I think there's that reboot going on so I wouldn't be surprised if this continues.

Ugh, I know. Not looking forward to more and more HP secrets.

I don’t know why HP is uniquely annoying to me, different from all the other popular topics that I’m not in the fandom (or anti-fandom) for.

I just need to work on the self-discipline to scroll by and maybe skip days when that seems to take over the conversation here.

(Anonymous) 2026-04-24 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm sure we'll continue to get "this sucks" "I still like this" "people shouldn't support this" "I secretly support this" etc secrets since it's being rebooted. I don't really care although it does get pretty repetitive sometimes. Generally I just scroll past. It's kind of funny though, because there are usually lots of replies to it, but most of the time no one seems very heated up or invested in it. It honestly just feels like people going through the motions sometimes.

This retconning of history is getting seriously old.

Yes, JKR is a horrible, monstrous person doing immeasurable harm with the profits she makes from this franchise. No, her behaviour is not and should not be excusable or justified in any way. Yes, this has irreparably tainted the HP franchise.

But that does not change the fact that, whatever you may retroactively think of their quality based on your feelings about their author, those books damn near single-handedly got an entire generation of kids and teens excited about reading. For years.

That is not something you can simply erase with your self-righteous "JKR sucks and it makes me feel morally superior to claim her books were always worthless poorly written trash" bullshit.

+1

I think a lot of people were just bitter about being the kids/teens who didn't like the books, and now they're doing a Revenge of the Nerds by coming back and saying, "see? We knew they were trash!"

Good for you. It really sucks for those of us who loved the books.

(Anonymous) 2026-04-25 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not rewriting history when I say Joanne was always a mid-level writer, at best, who danced on the edge of misogyny and racism with her work, but got away with it because one day a bunch of kids who wouldn't know a good book if it bit them decided Harry Potter was "OH MY GAWD, NEW AND ORIGINAL!" and their parents were just happy their kids were reading 'something.'

The only thing Joanne really did was win the best-timing lottery ever award.

(Anonymous) 2026-04-25 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I get what you're saying (I don't even disagree! I think JKR is a hack!) but... what books do you expect kids to be reading? Like, I think HP fans need to get over themselves but you sound like a weirdo for harping over how kids in 1999 should've had better taste in books... somehow...

SA

I am a weirdo. And a reading snob. When I was the same age as the average reader of Harry Potter, I was reading and comprehending at a college level. Which balanced out how much I sucked at fractions.

What I expected was for the kids to like what they liked, because that's what they do. That's what they've always done. Nothing's going to change that.

But I also expected the adults in the room to keep a firmer grip on reality. Instead, they allowed their children to confuse Joanne's writing with some grand work of genius. And then when those kids grew up, they held on to that delusion to make themselves feel better about their poor taste in reading as youths.

You know? Like Twilight readers.

The age old question: why do kids like the things they like? If anybody knew the answer to that, corporations would have taken full advantage and beyond by now.

(Anonymous) 2026-04-25 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
And in this case, the answer isn't even complicated: kids love the idea of finding out that there's something special about them and the idea of magic being real. Combine the two things and of course kids are going to go wild over it.

(Anonymous) 2026-04-25 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Like, a lot of children like poop jokes, unfortunately.

(Anonymous) 2026-04-24 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Based on your disdain of the Harry Potter series and your low effort rewording of a secret we get every week, I think the issue is that you lack imagination. That really sucks for you but doesn’t really explain why you would attempt to shit on the taste of children 25 years ago.

(Anonymous) 2026-04-24 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It's because they were kids or young tweens when they read it. That's it. I feel that way towards a lot of corny media I was into at that age.

And their parents who read it to them who are now in their 50s buying Sorting Hat tree toppers, Dobey socks and goes to see the Cursed Child in London... *Stares at family member*

(Anonymous) 2026-04-25 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
My parents read the first few books before I did because I was too busy with school at the time to read much. They're both intelligent, well-read people. They usually ended up reading me approved Good Children's Literature as bedtime stories when I was younger. Hearing their discussions at dinner about the Harry Potter books was what made me want to read them as soon as I got the chance.

They did not, I'm very sure, ever claim they were great literature or even the best children's books ever. That didn't make them incapable of enjoying the books a whole lot. So it wasn't just kids and that's fine. They had universal appeal.

(Anonymous) 2026-04-25 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I understand that, I had teachers who were Harry Potter fans. But it still stands most people who still like Harry Potter despite their negative feelings towards JKR grew up with it. Just like how I feel about various childhood media that "imprinted" on me.

(Anonymous) 2026-04-24 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd rather be a sucker than a self-righteous snob.

Congratulations!
