If someone has a pattern of digging up receipts on people's old stuff, like a variety of popular creators, performers etc, not just one or two they may have had personal interaction with, but like when it's just a thing they do for a hobby or.. just habitual... I feel like they seem untrustworthy and possibly even toxic.

IDK but that kind of person who just makes it their business to look into everyone else's to find dirt. They just seem like someone i wouldn't trust in person or in a relationship of any kind.

(PS: I'm not saying that looking into people's pasts is always bad but just.. the kind of person who makes it their hobby to look for wrongs in people's pasts when they're famous/known, they just seem like someone with a very 1-to 100 'if you're Problematic once , you shouldn't be forgiven" type mindset.)

100%. If their hobby is digging for receipts, they will absolutely dig for yours as well, no matter how trivial. Policing morality is these people's dopamine rush.

Maybe I'm being obtuse but... receipts? Like going through the trash to see what they bought?

That's actually an apt metaphor for the behavior OP is describing.

It basically means you have proof of what you claim a person did. For example, if I say "Brenda harasses immigrants, and I come with receipts," then I would present a link to a video or multiple tweets where Brenda is engaging in that exact behavior.

AYRT

Ah, gotcha.

Depends on the time for me. If it's like, "this guy was saying bigoted shit literally last month and keeps doubling down" like please give all the receipts.

But if it's like someone did a thing 20 years ago when they were a teenager, and that's the most recent thing they can find, and they're making that a big deal out of it... yeah, that's hard to care about and makes the searcher look like a drama monger.

nayrt

This, and when callouts are a mix of serious stuff with totally petty stuff, it discredits the whole story and distracts from the issue. It just makes the person complaining look deceitful, even if it's actually true that the person they're calling out is an asshole.

I’m glad people like that exist tbh. Celebrities have been able to get away with so much shit for so long! But I do think there is a sort of statute of limitations. Anything pre 2020 needs to be a major thing unless the person was a teen or younger at the time.

personally i think that stuff when someone was a kid needs to be somehow relevant/a pattern to their behavior now OR something major somehow. Otherwise i really don't care what they said when they were teen or child. I expect kids to do/say dumb stuff. They're still ...still cooking as a human being .
