Only slightly related, rambling, unhelpful, sorry
(Anonymous) 2026-04-25 06:44 am (UTC)(link)But like, you can sing/write/draw/whatever about crazy stuff and the audience is *naturally* going to assume the crazy is intended. That singing about a romantic murder is a metaphor for a break up, or other complicated emotions. I didn't (and still don't!) assume Carrie Underwood fucks up every boyfriend's car with a bat, I know that song tells the story of extreme actions to convey a feeling of catharsis or whatever. "I dug his number from my phone/and moved on to healthily and happily live alone" isn't necessarily something a dozen teen girls will sing around a bonfire to vent their angst.
If I were to go out tomorrow and stab a man to death with a broken bottle you could put together an edit of my posts and emails where I say things like "I'll kill him if he forgets the potato salad" and "I want to have the energy of a wine mom holding a chunk of the bottle's neck as a shiv for my next dnd character" and the like to paint me as someone who's been hiding the desire to stab people all my life. But I'm not! (I'm a blunt force trauma girlie I SWEAR)
TW IRL rape/pedophilia
I listened to the Behind the Bastards episode about Jimmy Savile (If you aren't from the UK or up on BBC history, he was a dj/tv personality/famous guy who abused So! Many! People! including kids) And the cohost was constantly SHOCKED that he'd make jokes about finding little girls attractive and that the audience would laugh. And, like, the audience didn't assume he was abusing 12 year olds. The assumed he was being silly by stating something pretend. Like calling a grandma "young lady" or reacting to a toddler's foam sword like you've been hit by a bat. I'm not saying it's *good* and indeed I'm glad a kid's attractiveness isn't a permitted topic of jokey jokes anymore (in my circles at least). But I can see where you'd be standing to laugh at a joke, and that you wouldn't assume a kid is actually in danger from a "Future Lady Killer" baby onsie. And, like, if the guy making these jokes also has a personal suite in the women's wing of a psych hospital that should raise a zillion red flags. Although it's hard to argue this when it feels like every male public figure is a danger to others. But I think that's because of how power works and I hate it.
But I just! People usually don't assume outlandish statements are literal. Because they usually aren't! AHHHH!
But no, yeah, forgive yourself. I'm sorry an artist you like's bad behavior ruined his art for you. We can all hope truth and justice will win out.
