After getting into Heated Rivalry, YouTube pushed the PWHL channel at me. I'm not a sports person but I started watching games just to have some more context for HR fics.

I think I might be a legit fan now??? I put the games on in the background, but then I stop doing what I'm doing and watch the game instead. I have favourite and least favourite teams (based entirely on vibes and jersey design though) and I get sad when I get spoiled on a game I couldn't see live.

Sports reporting is spoilers now?

I think it’s actually one of the earliest forms of “spoiler-aversion” that I remember from decades ago.

There’s a funny bit in the show SportsNight where one of the anchors wants to avoid knowing anything about one particular game so he can watch the recording with his new girlfriend after the show. (They get the other anchor to report on that segment, while Dan is just offscreen, wearing muffling headphones.)

It's just... ironic to pick the ONE thing that gets reported in papers, on tv, on the radio. Movie reviews don't do that. TV schedules don't do that. Book reviews don't do that. It's a well known societal expectation that sports events be broadcast far and wide, so to choose to get into that and call such things "spoilers" baffles me.

For sports spoilers, most people are only concerned about avoiding it until they get home to watch a recording, or the highlights show that evening. Like, no one's expecting to go days or weeks without finding out the score.

+1 it is super common for fans to avoid reporting about a game/match/race if they didn’t get to see it live. I haven’t been into sport in a long time but 30+ years ago I would do that and it was normal for years before that. The radio stations would all say they’re going to do the scores and recaps after the next commercial break or at a set time so it was easier to avoid spoiling it for yourself. Although if you support a local sports team chances are you’ll know if it was win or lose even if you avoid learning the score simply based on how everyone else is acting.

I'm on the wrong side of the globe for sports reporting to care about a North American sports league (nor do I consume any regular sports reporting anyway).

The PWHL channel streams games live but doesn't archive the live streams because they post an edited version (without ad breaks and intermissions) a couple of days later.

I can't catch all the games live because of time zones so for most games I have to wait for the edited version to be posted. When I say spoilers I mean YouTube pushing content on me revealing the end scores in the title or thumbnail.

No shit sherlock. Nobody wants to be spoiled for a game. Keep up.

Thanks for turning my comment into a secret, secret maker!

Great news for me: Ottawa, which I decided to imprint on, just clinched their spot in the playoffs. There's now a 50% chance that a team I like wins it all.

I'm a big fan of the PWHL! I caught it by complete chance right when the leauge started and never looked back! Which teams do you like? Any favourite players?

My favourite teams are Ottawa and Boston, which I realise, is sus coming from a Heated Rivalry fan but I swear it's just a coincidence. My tastes are purely based on jerseys and vibes, I promise.

Favourite player: I'm probably not far enough into it yet to have one yet, though I'm very fond of Clark because her mic'd up video is what led me to the PWHL rabbit hole. And Philips has been amazing in the goal.

What about you? Do you have genuine reasons for your favourites or did you also just randomly decide who to support? I'm stoked to find a fan here on FS, I kinda thought this would be a secret with no comments, lol.

AYRT

Sorry for the late response!
Honestly, I'm not even in the Heated Rivalry fandom, but I've been an Ottawa fan since the beginning so I am so happy! I actually like Boston a lot too, even if my NHL holdover makes me a bit hissy about it, lol.
Clark is awesome! I love those mic'd up moments, especially when they go like, "ya, I got a mic, I got a mic"!

I've been a fan of Hockey since forever, tbh, so I have long ingrained /opinions/ about certain hockey bases, but Ottawa and Montreal are my top two teams, even though I'm sure some of my folks are rolling in their graves about it. lol. Poulin basically had me in a heartbeat, and I immediately was drawn to players (that of course got traded right away) like Lexie Adzjia, Mikyla Grant-Mentis, and others, because that's just my vibe apparently. I watched Battle of the Blades which is a Canadian show where hockey players try their hand a figure skating, and Spooner was on that, so I adore her too! I would love Toronto but I'm not a huge fan of their coach, so basically it is mostly random, but with a heavy helping of 'oh no you don't' exposure, I guess you can say.
