It's wild because even in the movies the men are gentle and caring, so it is as you said: a very shallow reading of even just the movies.

But these types usually always hate Frodo as well so I know they're not to be listend to.

I wonder if they hate Sam too. Because, like, I was just having a discussion on Tumblr the other day about Sam's resistance of the Ring and the fact that the best the Ring could come up with to tempt him was a giant garden. Sam is as meek, soft, gentle as they come and he's one of the very few who is able to resist the Ring almost precisely because he's small and dreams small and is content with small things.

Sam has his 'manly badass' moment against Shelob and in the Orc tower, so they tend to like him because of that while ignoring his kind and gentle heart which is what made him be the one to be able to help Frodo when the pull of the Ring got too strong.

They won't know how he resists the Ring in the books because they have never read them, but will act like they have(while getting lore points wrong in discussions).
