It has been great so far! I'm about halfway thru.

I just read an insane fanfic. It's half a million words, it follows dead characters' adventures in hell, I saw the main twist coming but man was it good, and now I'm desperate for the sequel which was last updated in 2016. Fuck me.

Ugh. I hate the printed on sticker of "now a hit movie / tv show" on the cover.

Mad at gamers being mad at games

(Anonymous) 2026-05-05 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
So, I'm annoyed at the Phasmophobia subreddit. I know I shouldn't be, particularly because I know it makes me a bit of a hypocrite, in that I'm getting worked up about things that don't really matter. But, well, here I am.

Tomorrow, an update to the game goes live that changes the character models and introduces a bunch of new animations. Official content creators got early access to the update, so we've all seen what it looks like. It's got flaws! Some things are janky, some things just don't flow or look quite right. The devs are actively soliciting feedback about it, are already working on some tweaks, and are opening a dedicated channel in the official Discord for people to post their suggestions and concerns. This makes sense, as the game is still in Early Access, which means that the players are the testers.

The subreddit's reaction has basically been that the update burned all of their houses down. The devs are incompetent, greedy, lazy, and disrespectful. They hate their player base, or at least don't give a fuck about them. They are taking advantage of the players, they are gaslighting the players, they are abusing the players. Their heads are so far up their asses that they might very well suffocate. How dare they do this. How dare they.

People get upset every single time there's an update, but it's really off the charts this time around. And, now, look -- there are some legitimate criticisms to be made, based off of what we've all seen so far. But "these new features could use some work" is a far different response from "you have exploited and victimized me."

This is a game that, depending on how and when someone picks it up, costs between $0.00 and $20.00 (I paid $15 my own self). There's no subscription, there are no DLCs, and there are no microtransactions. You pay a small one time fee, and sometimes you don't even pay at all. Most of the people who are losing their shit have gotten hundreds of hours of entertainment out of it, which means that if they decide to quit tomorrow, they'd have more than gotten their money's worth (my goodness, people pay $60 or $70 for games that they only wind up playing for 20 or 30 hours). But still, they feel they've been wronged. They can't just say, "this game is no longer for me;" either they enjoy everything about it for the rest of their lives, or they've been conned. And I just can't understand it. When the day comes that the game no longer appeals to me, I'll just...go play something else. I won't think, "THE SELFISH GREEDY DEVS HAVE BETRAYED ME!!"

I think sometimes that it's at least partially a case of envy. The guy who created it has made hundreds of millions of pounds from it, and probably doesn't need to work another day for the rest of his life. The impression from the subreddit, therefore, is that he doesn't care, because he doesn't need to (I've seen a few people bitterly say that if they produced as little work as he does, they'd be fired). But the fact that he hired an entire team of developers and continues to work on the game directly refutes that. He obviously cares about it. Meanwhile, the creators of a direct competitor, Demonologist, outright said that they got the payday they wanted, and therefore no longer cared to have anything to do with the game (it was "officially abandoned" for awhile, until being picked up again by a different team) -- yet it's held up as an example of "how to do things right" by some of the same people who call Phasmo's creator "greedy."

I have too many feelings about this. I need to end it here and let it go.

Right? Like for example Thrawn himself is in the Disney canon.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-05 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Same. Even if I liked the movie, I prefer "real" cover art, not a shot from the movie. It just seems so low effort and not very pretty.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-05 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
I don't watch this show, but I LOLed over "emotional support skull".

I'm so grateful that I had my childhood, teen and college years before social media took off in a big way. Not that I said horrible stuff, but I was a dumb, mouthy kid and I'm sure there's something that could've been used against me.

Paul Rudd looks so SUPER SERIOUS here that it's hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-05 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
I hate that too for the most superficial of reasons: if I have to buy the post-movie/TV show adaptation of a book, I don't want people to think that I've only read it due to the movie/TV show!

My tiny little brain translated EU to European Union and I was very confused for a hot second there.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-05 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
I hate when comic books do it too!

(Anonymous) 2026-05-05 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
With the way Star Wars has gone, I think anything at all could fit in canon.

I have no familiarity with the comics, but Thanos was boring as shit. They kept hinting at this big baddie, and then he showed up and it was major yawns all round.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-05 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yes. That kind of person is generally at best trying to increase their social status by taking others down, or at worst looking for ways to wield power and control over other people. Either way, they're someone you wanna give a wide berth.

I can relate. This is basically me looking at the Valheim fanbase every time there's a dev update or game update. Similarly, it is also an early release game people have paid a one time, relatively low fee for. And while there are valid criticisms (*cough* Ashlands *cough*), there are plenty of unhinged comments resembling what you reported up there.

I just think some folks are entitled, easily bored, and no timeline or amount of development will satisfy them. And you're right, it's also frustrating to see how many people give up their agency and either accept things as they are, or move on to something else. (And I get it! I can only play so much Valheim before I start getting bored it. But... I also play other things because I know the devs still have another biome to complete. I don't whine about a game I paid $20 for and have put over 2000 hours into.)

Same. Bandit Keith is my first thought too.

AYRT

Yeah, entitlement is definitely a big part of it, I think. It's a "customer is always right" sort of attitude -- if they've spent any amount of money on it, then they must be catered to, and it must wind up being something that they like. But the reality is that entertainment is subjective and creators can't please everyone, so sometimes, they're going to buy a game that they wind up not liking. The best thing for them to do is to accept it and move on, but instead they interpret their disappointment as a personal affront.

Anyway, I'm sorry to hear that you experience similar things in the community for your game. Guess it's one of those things that's more common than any of us would like.

The one guy looks like Guy Gardiner in his horrible Warror phase.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-05 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
I very much agree!

(Anonymous) 2026-05-05 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. I think I would make one exception to this and it's the menswear guy (Derek Guy / [profile] dieworkwear on Twitter), who has turned using someone's own past posts to own them into an art. I think it works for him because his format is purely reactive -- only does it to people who are already starting shit, and he restricts himself to looking just for hypocrisy, so it's not a blanket "you said something problematic one time ever" sort of thing, but more like "it's really funny you're saying x is important, because look at all these times you failed to live up to that."

But yeah, aside from that, I do think people who comb through years of social media activity for one problematic post are generally pretty scary because they have no sense of proportion or scale, and seems like they're only happy if they're tearing someone down.

yeah of the three this one I like least, which is weird because Fern is actually my favourite character from the series. Its very different to the other two with the characters being on the road and travelling, and not in a cozy shop. Had a few higher stakes too I guess.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-05 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
Whoa...yeah I can definitely agree to this.

Exited out of a fandom because there was one person in the fandom who was shady as hell. Any time I or any of our friends said something about a character or actor or writer, etc Fandomer 1 didn't like, we'd know because she would retweet problematic shit about said character/person.
IE.
I gushed over liking Carmy from The Bear, and suddenly Fandomer 1's Twitter TL is filled with RTs criticizing how Carmy is a toxic boss, shitty boyfriend and cowardly brother/son.
A fandom friend RTs a new Adam Driver project because they're an Adam Driver fan, and suddenly Fandomer 1's TL is filled with RTs about how Adam Driver joined the military "in response to 9/11", insinuating Islamophobia.

And the cherry on top? Fandomer 1 would make excuses for or gloss over the past transgressions of characters or entertainers they liked.

They were almost there, but always reverted back to shaming others without reflecting on their own behavior and feelings.

I watched the 2019 Black Christmas remake a couple of months ago and it was pretty bad. Whatever commentary it was supposed to be making about rape culture, toxic masculinity, and strength and sisterhood of women (and there was some questionable delivery of those messages) was undercut by the reveal.
