I feel guilty for saying I hate most rap music because people assume it's for racial reasons but the truth is I hate the treatment and depiction of women.

I don't think it is that much worse than other genres. Country is also really bad about women.

Yeah, as is a lot of rock, to be honest.

IMO, it’s fine to find any genre not generally to your tastes. Or even to say you’ve never found an example of it that you like. But I think it’s worth being careful before painting with such a broad brush when the actual politics/tone/subject matter does have so much variety.

The rap from the 80/90s is much better than the modern stuff. Fucking mumble-rap.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-07 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely no better on the misogyny front, though.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-07 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
No, but at least it's better music.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-07 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I like some rap but you have to filter through a massive amount of bullshit to find good stuff. Even a lot of rap by women buys into that shit (looking at you, Nicki Minaj).

(Anonymous) 2026-05-07 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Minaj is a Trumper, so not surprising.

The traditional response is "you're racist for thinking sexist rap is the only rap that exists."

See also: whenever someone complains about misogyny in anime, someone else responds "you're racist for thinking sexist anime is the only anime that exists."

I dunno; I don't listen to enough rappers to say which are or aren't sexist. I think Lupe Fiasco is okay on that front? (His bigotry is "I stopped being poor, so I get to call these other poor people fuckups," and he's still less obnoxious about it than most.)

Serious question: How is it unique from misogyny in other genres? I've dropped a *lot* of rock and metal albums from non-black artists because of the terrible lyrics about women. Or the IRL allegations against the musicians.

IMO there's nothing wrong with not liking rap. I like it, but it has a very specific sound. I can't get behind genres like folk or punk because I don't vibe with it. But I always wonder if people say "but the sexism" because it's highlighted more for obvious reasons.
