I'm glad there was some pushback with the Meta Gala this year. It's always been pretty tone deaf in my eyes, but with the state of the world right now, it's really disgusting. Watching rich and famous people dress up and parade around is one of the last things I want to do right now. I don't care who was there and what they looked like.

Balance is important, even with the world as it is. Let people enjoy the things that they like, even if you find them stupid. I mean, did you expect them to cancel it just because the world's falling apart?

Ignorant take. Do you even know why there was backlash?

This is how I feel regarding the Americana stuff coming out now for July 4th. Just feels wrong right now. I mean, our obsession with our country has always felt weird as an American who grew up in another country and never developed that obsession. But now? It feels so tone deaf.

I grew up in the U.S. and the performative nationalism around this holiday still feels weird to me. I also think the whole "my country right or wrong" attitude is a touch toxic, because it tends to be used as an excuse when one's country is doing awful things. Both are connected, and both are used by politicians who want to distract citizens from what they're actually doing.

Yup. I honestly never grew up with love of country. I've lived in three of them, all had their own plusses and minuses. But if you do love your country, wouldn't you want it to be the best it can be? That at least is a kind of nationalism I could understand.

Honestly, I see it as a parallel with family dynamics and how people can enable toxic family members out of "love" and "loyalty". American patriotism is constantly reinforced by people who think that any disagreement or criticism is disloyal, un-American, not one of us, only something traitors and foreigners (with a not so subtle hint that those are synonyms to some people) would do, etc. There's a push to maintain the illusion of noble perfection rather than fixing what's broken, and if you rock the boat, then YOU'RE the problem.

It's kind of weird how similar that is to family dynamics, actually. But I guess that's human nature for you.

Funny, this was the one year I didn’t see pushback. Which just goes to show that our perceptions aren’t absolute truth. Your line about the state of the world is another example of that because not everyone thinks the world is falling apart and many people have been watching their world crumble for years now.

Plenty of pushback, you're just not looking.

Yeah. "It is a fundraiser for the museum!" It is owned by Bezos now. He has like a billion dollars.

I don't think the Met Gala itself is inherently problematic as it is for a good cause, but the association this year with Jeff Bezos really made it in poor taste. All that money spent to support something he could have supported 1000x times over.
