I'm glad there was some pushback with the Meta Gala this year. It's always been pretty tone deaf in my eyes, but with the state of the world right now, it's really disgusting. Watching rich and famous people dress up and parade around is one of the last things I want to do right now. I don't care who was there and what they looked like.

Balance is important, even with the world as it is. Let people enjoy the things that they like, even if you find them stupid. I mean, did you expect them to cancel it just because the world's falling apart?

This is how I feel regarding the Americana stuff coming out now for July 4th. Just feels wrong right now. I mean, our obsession with our country has always felt weird as an American who grew up in another country and never developed that obsession. But now? It feels so tone deaf.

Funny, this was the one year I didn’t see pushback. Which just goes to show that our perceptions aren’t absolute truth. Your line about the state of the world is another example of that because not everyone thinks the world is falling apart and many people have been watching their world crumble for years now.

I cannot listen to the Maria Mena song "It Took Me By Surprise" anymore; it's far too painful and real now.

See, I got married right out of high school, to my boyfriend, and we were so happy.

But what burdened us was my undiagnosed bipolar disorder, and man, it ran him ragged. I was miserable to live with, I know. He was such a nice guy, and ended up despising me and turning cold and cruel.

And I feel like I pushed him to that.

We've been divorced since 2018.

I’m sorry, OP.

I miss the brief moment when Romantasy was called Paranormal Romance and had its own section in the bookshop. It's bad enough that science-fiction, fantasy and (fairly frequently) horror get smooshed together, but now my space operas are competing for space with tiktok favoured demon/angel/vampire/werewolf/faerie boyfriends, and they frequently lose.

Mixed-genres can be hard to figure out where to put. But these do tend to lean more towards the romance genre, with the fantasy or scifi elements really just a backdrop.

Talk to your bookshop employees. Even if it’s a chain. We have a brand new Barnes and Noble in town and their fantasy section was exclusively romantasy. None of it sells. In their first 4-5 months of being open they got so much negative feedback about the lack of regular fantasy that they made the original fantasy section Romantasy and created a new fantasy section. And our local Books a Million long ago separated sci-fi, fantasy, and horror. The romantasy stuff is all in a small display called BookTok. Even the big chains let their stores make adjustments, it just takes a bit of time and requires customers to speak up. Let them know they are losing sales and they’ll remedy that.

Daniel Day Lewis was amazing as John Proctor in the filmed Crucible adaptation. I consider it to be one of his finest roles. I always cry at the ending.

The main reason I wouldn't touch Frieren with a ten foot pole is the completely idiotic names. They would probably bother me anyway but being German adds another huge amount of cringe to it that I just can't get over.

I recently bit the bullet and dyed my curls blonde and I'm having so much fun/feel so confident this way. I like to imagine, indulgently, that I am Carrie Bradshaw serving it down a city avenue.

I feel like there are better blonde characters to find inspiration in. A lot better. But if she inspires you, then you do you.

I've got this celebrity crush of 10+ years. I follow his work, both as an actor and writer. Liking him has had such a positive influence on my life!

Now he's in the public eye again because of a film project (which has already had controversy floating around it, nothing relating to him but disappointing anyway). It makes me think that I kinda dread looking him up during his "spikes" of fame. Nothing specific, just...a kind of anxiety that, at besty discourse will mildly sour something that's positive to me, and at worst, that in today's climate he may say something insensitive that may make my perception of him change and lowkey ruin it.

I feel so silly for this!

Without fail, every single time I post on FS that I am a fan of a celebrity, they unexpectedly and very publicly do something stupid or shitty, fans feel surprised and betrayed, and they end up falling from grace.

I'm starting to wonder if the curse will kick in even if I claim to be a fan of a celebrity I actually dislike...

I feel this, kind of. It can be jarring if you have too happy an ending when everything else was grimdark. But I do like when there is still hope but also a realistic potrayal of war and its affects on people.

[personal profile] philstar22 2026-05-09 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
What songs do you love to listen to on a long trip?

Re: Favorite travel songs

Hamilton. Hadestown. Movie scores. Symphonies. 80s playlists. Or I catch up on my podcasts.

Bouncy, happy stuff. I can deal with traffic jams and lane hogging idiots and blind, stupid drivers who shouldn’t even be allowed to be a front seat passenger if I’m bopping along singing happy stuff and smiling big.

Just as Good

What are some remakes or covers that you think are equal to the original? We always talk about how bad remakes are or how some outshine the originals. But what about the ones that aren’t terrible yet aren’t better than the original?
