I revisited this movie as an adult because I remembered liking it as a kid, and man did I find it boring. I found the ROUS bit funny but that was it. I haven’t watched it again and am mildly baffled at it’s popularity in fandom as a great movie.

I alove this one still. It is a fun plane movie or background movie for me, but I feel surprisingly bored by other "classics" the internet loves from the same era. I was so sad to not feel the joy for the dark crystal when I tried to rewatch as an aduot. That movie was so magical to me as a kid.

Just curious, did you watch the Netflix prequel series?

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
I tried watching that. Didn't make it to the end of the first episode. It was so awful. The backstory of the movie was entirely discarded, replaced by a cast of characters that seem to share a single, half-dead brain cell. If the rest of the series wasn't going to be them being tortured to death like some puppety snuff film, there wasn't a reason to watch it.

Fair enough. I liked it for what it was. My biggest critique was it didn't include my boy skekNa.

Transcript - The Princess Bride

This movie is so overrated. It is okay. But honestly the secondary characters are the better part. The main characters are boring. And I cannot get past that slap. It has not aged well.

"The secondary characters are better than the main characters" is a common complaint about old adventure movies. And modern party-based RPGs, come to think of it. And I think there's some of this in shonen manga. I guess something about action-adventure invites bland protagonists.

Is this bait? Because you're so fucking wrong I don't even know where to start. Just enjoy not watching Princess Bride and tell your meatspace friends your thoughts on how "bad" it is. I'm sure it'll be fun.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
This is a weird comment. How is one wrong about personal taste?

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Either bait or the movie went straight over OP's head.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP

I mean, speaking as someone who lived through the 80s, I've never gotten the hype outside of some memeable dialogue. I don't hate it, it's just okay.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Not getting the hype is one thing. Disliking it for OP's stated reasons is bizarre.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
You don't have to agree with OP's criticisms, but they didn't say they disliked it. And even if they did, no, it's not "bizarre" to dislike it for those reasons.

Not OP, obviously.

I've seen this movie several times and it always went in one ear, out the other for me. I don't get the hype either. And I grew up an Andre the Giant fan.

Also I have a visceral dislike of Carey Elwes. When people hear this I always hear "But he was Wes!!!" and my answer was always "...so?"

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's a free country (for some), you're allowed to be wrong.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Dude. The romantic relationship is meant to be trite and overblown and exist only as a mechanism for the adventure and comedy. The movie makes it so clear that I recognized that even as a kid.

It's the story of a grandfather's love for his sick grandson, trying to cheer him up with a ridiculous tale. I think that's why it's held its appeal for a lot of people, along with the incredible ensemble cast you mention and a horde of quotable lines that made it a pop culture phenomenon before memes existed.

And nobody got slapped. JFC.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Er, yes, there is a slap

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
In what scene?

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
I think they mean when Westley raised his hand like he was going to slap Buttercup.

No other scene even came close to a slap.

Eh, it didn't click with me when I finally saw it, tbbh. But I can see why so many people love it, though.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, you got some heated replies to this one. Anyway I'll just say that I don't agree, I really enjoy the movie, but I think you're 100% valid for not liking it. It's ok for people to have different preferences and enjoy different things.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
I am not American, so it wasn't my childhood movie. So I really don't understand the hype. It's like, okay
