Coughing

[personal profile] philstar22 2026-05-11 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone figured out tricks for that phase of a cold where everything is draining, good, but you can't stop coughing to get any sleep?

I just chug Robitussin. If you can't use dextromethorphan, my sympathies.

Have you stopped touching your eyes yet? That's how to not get colds.

I do take the extra strength liquid mucinex that has both mucus thinner and detro in it. It helps a little, but not much.

And what? I don't think I touch my eyes that much?

It only takes one eye rub.

Okay? That seems really random as there are lots of ways to get sick, particularly for people like me with asthma and allergies.

OK but I told you months ago that rubbing your eyes will absolutely make you sick. They're a mucous membrane. Any germ on your fingers goes straight in. Just saying.

I stick a lozenge in my cheek and then sleep on that side.

I use one before I get ready to go to sleep. But I worry if I have one in when sleeping that I'll swallow it and choke.

Senegar & ammonia. It tastes like shit but it works for me.

Sleeping in the recliner so I’m partially upright and don’t choke on my mucus. It’s not perfect, but I do get to sleep.

Halls menthol lemon honey coughdrops, sugar free (so as not to worry about my teeth) and tuck it in my cheek as I go to sleep. It usually helps just enough to let me fall asleep, though I admit there's a danger of waking up with a sticky cough drop attached to your cheek/pillow/hair.

Honestly I'm just worried I'd swallow them. I do have them, but I always make sure I've finished it before I go to sleep.

It's possible, yeah. That's why I tuck it between my back molars and my cheek. Luckily, the cough drops are pretty small and dissolve quickly, so even if I did swallow one, it'd be unpleasant but not fatal or anything.

NyQuil or the equivalent. But also, using another pillow or two to prop up my head and shoulders, so I'm halfway between lying down and sitting up, helps - it does take a fair amount of arrangement so that my neck has enough support.

I have to sleep with a lot of pillows because it helps keep thr mucus from collecting up my chest and throat. When possible a humidifier helps a lot. I've learned to boil water with star anise, cinnamon, cloves and Sichuan peppercorns. Drink a mug of it before bed.
