They push back because that is an insane idea. You know that it is illegal to fire anyone if they are pregnant.

Yeah, it's sexual discrimination. Plus, working around an actor's pregnancy forces the creators to think outside the box, which sometimes leads to really, really cool stuff. Arguably the X-files would not be as good as it was without Scully getting abducted, which only happened because Gillian Anderson was pregnant.
