I've been watching Race Across the World with my mother.

That's not the secret.

The secret is that in season four, Eugenie and Isobel reminded me of us, and season three's Tricia and Cathie is what I want our relationship to be like. I have terrible anxiety and my mother has been trying since we lost dad but doesn't really understand.

Seeing Tricia be supported by Cathie and the relationship between Ladi and Monique left me aching for something that can't be replaced

You catch more flies with honey, yada yada,

But another part of this that doesn't really get discussed is how yes you can be as nice as you like, but that still won't guarantee interest in the thing you want to make. And I think more people who are into an unpopular fandom thing need to understand this, because there seems to be this bizarre expectation that if you do everything right people will flock to your creations, which... isn't true.

What's popular in a fandom is so for a reason and if you create something oppositive to that you have to be able to sit with the fact that you'll get less interest in what you're making. It's not fair, but it is reality.

I haven't played my main Stardew Valley save in several months, and now I can't remember what I was doing in it. It's fall day 1 of year 4 or so, and I don't want to mess things up, so I keep loading it and then exiting without saving, or playing a casual save that I am not invested in.

I know I need to just jump in and do that first fall day, and then once it's over and done I'll be able to move on and keep playing the save, but I am finding it hard because I keep obsessing over wanting to do it "perfectly" (and it doesn't matter! I know it doesn't matter because there's always another chance and another year, but I am still focusing on it).

There is a very, very long fic in my fandom that is almost at its conclusion, and the author seems to have totally given up on finishing it. She has had life changes which is very understandable. But it's so hard when I see her doing other fics for different fandoms, but not finishing the one for the fandom I enjoy. I would NEVER complain to her about it but it honestly hurts me that we're so so so close to the end and it seems that she isn't going to finish it. 😭

Here's the part that's a secret:
Like I said, I have not said anything to her and will not and I would never harass her but the bad part of me wants to spam her B E G G I N G her to finish it. I WILL NOT but part of me wants to. Just so she knows how much people want it.

They push back because that is an insane idea. You know that it is illegal to fire anyone if they are pregnant.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh this is a fun one, sound reasoning but also mean, nice amount of potential controversy without being overdone like JK Rowling shit or whatever.

I'd say, I don't think it's unreasonable under ALL circumstances to be like, you just can't do this job while pregnant and so we need to find someone else, but I think a lot of the time it makes the end product suffer more to fully fire an actor than to just, work around stuff like that. Like I'd generally rather a show find an excuse for a character to only be in shots from the waist up and/or not be around for a few episodes than to kill off the character entirely without a good narrative reason.

And that's just my perspective as someone who wants shows to be good! I imagine if you like, empathize with the desire to have children or whatever, you might also think that people should be able to do that without it impacting their careers. Personally I don't really care about that. Though I do think gender equality is important, so maybe we should also start firing men who decide to have children.

If a show can't handle its actresses getting pregnant and the producers' kneejerk reaction is to fire them for the crime of expanding their families, then the show deserves to crash and burn in hell (along with the producers' reputations... I can only hope).

If soap operas and sitcoms can figure out how to handle IRL pregnancies, then there's no excuse.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's sexual discrimination. Plus, working around an actor's pregnancy forces the creators to think outside the box, which sometimes leads to really, really cool stuff. Arguably the X-files would not be as good as it was without Scully getting abducted, which only happened because Gillian Anderson was pregnant.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, definitely. I get more hits with overrated shit than I do with what's lesser known at the time. But this is not a surprise to me.

But there's always a chance some folks will take interest beyond what's overrated and check out the rest. Very small one, of course.

The abrupt ending of KF has really got to me. It was just so quick. And with the reason being that Dan and Jordan can't work together anymore, it sucks. I know it is being parasocial but I've been listening to these guys for years. I wish Dan had decided to continue the podcast with someone else (Jordan is meh to me).

Jobs can't dictate your lifestyle, like getting married, or having kids. At least, not in anything approaching a modern country.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
This is silly. Shows can work around this. Sometimes an actor breaks an ankle and can't run, either.

Not a big deal.

What I don't like is when a pregnant actor leads to a character being pregnant. It only really worked in Succession.

I do wonder how much this case shaped how soap operas would've handled things of this nature in the future

You do realize that pregnancy is temporary, right? It doesn't make sense to write a character out completely or (even dumber) recast the character just because the original actress gets pregnant.

Yay to your last sentence!

Probably not at all. Firing pregnant actresses happened before and after that case. And creatively working around pregnancy has always been a thing, too, up to and including writing it into the show.

I understand the frustration. Sorry it's happening to you. Maybe if you only send one email politely explaining why you love their fic so much, they'll want to finish it?

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP but the pic has Knowledge Fight on it. I wondered the same thing for a second until I noticed that lol I am assuming it’s a YouTube channel but I didn’t look it up so could be wrong.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I don't know if it's getting older, or finally realizing that the relationships I have with my family members are unlikely to change for the better but I get a little depressed when I see great parent/adult child relationships in media.

A podcast named Knowledge Fight. They listen to Alex Jones (and other right wing assholes) and critique them. A couple weeks ago, they took a week off unexpectedly. That Friday, Jordan posted an unhinged video on Twitch about the Onion acquiring Inforwars. On Sunday night they posted 30 minute episode saying the podcast was over because they have a difference of opinions that they can't come to terms on.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you're able to hold it in, good on you. I feel you, but I've been that author. We know people want the fic. We know! We really want to finish it too! But something has happened, the words won't come, the brain won't plot, sometimes we've fallen so hard out of love with the fandom that no amount of wishing we could bring a satisfying finish to the fans, we know it's never going to happen no matter how many emails or comments we get. The comments just make us feel more guilty and makes it even less likely we'll dredge up an ounce of love for the story in order to finish it, if anything we start resenting the fic.

Just know there's reasons, hopefully that helps the longing.

Casefile, Last Podcast on the Left, Criminal, Nosleep Podcast, Knifepoint Horror, We're Alive, SAYER. Wolf 359, Wrong Station, The Truth, Film Sack; My Brother, My Brother, and Me; Do Go On, and Sawbones.

this exactly, and why I laugh at OP's bait. just wait a couple months, it'll be over, it's not like the actor lost an arm and now that's glaringly on screen all the time.

What are some of your favorite ways an actress's pregnancy has been handled?

(Anonymous) 2026-05-11 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a big fan of large, awkward things in front of their stomach.
