Oh, also, Criminal Minds did great with JJ, especially her first pregnancy where they used it to move the character forward and get her in a relationship.

I genuinely like when shows manage to remove the character for a season, sending them off somewhere to occasionally appear in shoulders-and-head shots, usually talking to the rest of the main cast by phone.
Leverage, for example. They used it as an opportunity to introduce a new temporary character and it was fun to see the altered team dynamics. Or Life, where the main character had to contend with a temporary partner for a few episodes.
