Eh, it's not as "lol random edgy" as Torchwood by a long shot! I would agree that they didn't think things all the way through (especially with Gunn's storylines) but I wouldn't say that was any worse than in later seasons of Buffy, e.g. Willow's S6 storyline rapidly turning from a power/abuse story to a more boring "addiction is bad, kids" metaphor so that they wouldn't have to face the fallout of things Willow did.
