Transcript – Angel

this show feels like it looked at the source material and said, How can I be Darker and Edgier without thinking things all the way through

It's basically Torchwood except 90s-flavored with extra trenchcoats and eyeliner and bonus pointy teeth

Yes, correct, it is a supernatural tribute to the pulp fiction and film noir of the 40s.

Yup. It is still okay. But I find it weird when people claim it is better than Buffy.

I wouldn’t disagree, but I’m curious about what’s behind “without thinking things all the way through”. Do have any illustrative examples from Angel? And do you find that’s qualitatively different from how Buffy was?

Wasn't Angel made before Torchwood? Shouldn't the comparisons be reversed? And I'm not sure what's meant by "without things all the way through?"

Yes, it came seven years before Torchwood. And I'd also like to know in what ways Angel the series didn't follow things through in OP's opinion.

I'm sorry if it's too harsh, but, IMO, it's a pretty shallow/uncharitable take of the show. It feels like you are blinded by its aesthetics and occasional darkness, which don't seem to be to your taste (fair), and don't try very hard to see that its heart is actually very hopeful. I wouldn't have kept on watching it and wouldn't love it as much if it was as you wrote, because I actually can't watch shows that are too bleak. Torchwood was a lot harder to watch because of this. And I pretty much keep going back and forth between Buffy and Angel as my favorite show of the two. Note aside, I wonder if season 4 of Angel or season 6 of Buffy is the darkest (in term of feelings).

Eh, it's not as "lol random edgy" as Torchwood by a long shot! I would agree that they didn't think things all the way through (especially with Gunn's storylines) but I wouldn't say that was any worse than in later seasons of Buffy, e.g. Willow's S6 storyline rapidly turning from a power/abuse story to a more boring "addiction is bad, kids" metaphor so that they wouldn't have to face the fallout of things Willow did.
