I love "hidden world" type fantasy stories. I never quite shed that childhood belief in magic, and that if I just turned the right corner, or looked behind the right tree, I'd find the gateway to fairyland or find the magic city. That said, there is no way in hell I'm watching the new Harry Potter show.

I hate how JK Rowling's very existence seems to have poisoned the fantasy genre. I really do.

Fantasy genre's doing as well as it ever has-- separating romantasy out as its own thing, which is booming. Even middle grade fantasy has had Rick Riordan doing a fine job and giving a boost to other authors! Rowling is a problem and I long for her to just shut up and enjoy her money in her fuckoff castle instead of ruining things for everyone, I go insane about the number of people who not only don't know but *can't be told* that she pals around with fascists. But she hasn't killed fantasy as a genre.

I don't think it has, though. Harry Potter wasn't original as an idea, but its popularity kind of put it in its own category. It's got very little to do with high fantasy, and the current hot subgenre of romantasy.

Kudos to the secret-maker on the choice of art.

I love those types of stories too! I'm glad more than just HP exist.

I'm waiting (forever) for the (eventual) Rivers of London series.

Much better than Harry Potter. It's not for everyone, but it should be a lot of fun. In 84 years.

Hell yes. I love those books.

A main character whose point of view I really enjoy. Magic that makes a lot more sense to me. And interesting cultural settings.

Huh. I mean it definitely fits the genrev

SA accidentally hit post

It definitely fits the genre but HP wouldn't actually be a story I'd first and foremost would connect to it. Like yes, the wizarding world is side by side with the normal world but I think because it primarily takes place at the school, I kind of ignored that aspect.

Yeah, when I see "hidden world" my first thought would be something like Narnia or Spirited Away. HP wouldn't occur to me.

NAYRT - I think they mean a world within a world. Buffy is another example, and even Twilight. Basically, urban fantasy.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-16 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Or both. A lot of people don't really distinguish like that. I know I don't. Not everything must be neatly divided and categorised. Some of us like it messy.

It doesn't have a TV show, but OP, have you tried the Wayward Children novella series? It's YA, and some of the later ones aren't as good IMO, but as a former seeker-of-portals-to-magical-worlds myself, it satisfies a part of my heart. There's even mention of a world that would have taken me for sure if I'd come across the door.
