Train Rides

Have you ever done a long train trip where the point was to enjoy the train trip (not just to get from point a to point b)?

Yes, a few times.

Berlin to Prague via Dresden. We did tour each city for multiple days but chose to take the train for the experience and it did not disappoint.

Sleeper train from London to Edinburgh. It was cool but also way overpriced and the journey was way too short. I think it was like 5.5 hours.

And Bergen railway which was amazing! It’s like nothing I have ever experienced but I will say that on the return journey to Oslo I was kinda bored because I saw pretty much everything on the way to Bergen.

There are some Amtrak tours I’d love to take but the prices are astronomical.

DA but I've been thinking about a Prague via train trip. I keep seeing ones that do Budapest and Prague and that seems fun.

I still haven’t made it to Hungary yet *cries* Budapest to Prague would be amazing!

I’ve done smaller train rides than the ones I listed. In Slovenia we took two alpine train rides but I don’t remember the details. They were sightseeing loops though and we were holidaying in Bled. I think we had to travel by taxi for only maybe twenty minutes for one and maybe 45 minutes to an hour for the other. And of course we did Zermatt and the Matterhorn. The Matterhorn was wonderful but also it reminded me of the Pike’s Peak cog railway in Colorado which honestly was a little more interesting. And whenever we were on holiday in Copenhagen we would get the city pass and always spent a day riding the trains exploring the surrounding area. The city pass gives (or gave) free access to the metro train up to like zone five which was a very, very large area. We got off in Helsingborg, Denmark and discovered there was a ferry to Helsingor, Sweden so after visiting the palace we went to Sweden on a whim for a few hours. I’ve also taken the Chunnel and it was a very strange and uncomfortable but cool experience. I was in an American car so getting off the train was not easy and I had to idle the whole way when everyone else was flying off at like 80 kmh LOL

no, but the only long train trips I've ever taken were in Japan, where the shinkansen is part of the experience. I really loved those trips. Osaka to Hiroshima, Hiroshima to Kumamoto, Kumamoto back to Osaka. the way the train glided through the countryside, the changing landscapes, the comfy seats, having a nice bento and a 100-yen sake while the world flies by...ahhh...

I consider trains like planes, not like cruise ships. I can't imagine taking one for the express purpose of taking 8hrs to just gawk at the landscape and nothing else - if I wanted that, I'd drive myself in a car.

Tokyo to Osaka on the regular train, not the Shinkansen. It runs down the coast and the scenery is amazing.

London to Edinburgh (and return) is the only train trip I've ever taken and I loved watching the scenery roll by. The greenery, the fog and low cloud, the sheep and cows grazing. High key my favourite memory of my last trip.

Only wish I'd taken some food the first time (legit thought they would have a food cart rolling along the aisle like in Harry Potter)

I took Inverness to Glasgow and they had the foot cart rolling along!

I might do that if it were an option near me.
