I love discussing why I and/or the other person did or didn’t like something. But sadly, only a few of my friends are interested in doing that.

I have a number of friends and relatives who just don’t bother to actually think about the other person’s preferences when making recommendations. They can be quite considerate in other ways, but they seem to just recommend whatever they’re enjoying. Even if I would expect them to know that it’s clearly not my kind of thing by now.

When I’m honest that I haven’t seen it and don’t intend to, they tell me how wonderful it is. And if I try to ask questions about what they liked or found interesting, they say they don’t want to spoil it for me.

The best option I’ve found is similar to OP’s. I pretend I’ve seen at least a little of it so we can actually have a conversation.
