I know this is unkind, which is why I'm putting it in a secret, and not saying it to other players. All the drama and fallout over the player customization update for Phasmophobia has made me feel really good about my life. If an update to a game I like sucks, then I'm able to just go about my business. I can do other things, play other games. But as it turns out, a lot of other people can't. This game is the only thing going on in their lives, and they don't know what to do without it. I feel sorry for them.

Lol. It is okay to be mad and complain about a game breaking update for a game you love. I'm mad about it and have stopped playing Phasmo (I have 300+ hours in the game). I have other hobbies. It doesn't make it any less sad that a game I loved was made unplayable because the devs pushed it out for a Alan Wake collab.

I mean, you say it yourself: it’s a game you like. But some people love it. And I’m not just talking about this one game; this is something that is happening with more regularity in games. Not only are people free to voice their grief about losing a game they loved but the more who do it, the better chances for slowing this trend.

I enjoyed Dawntrail, I thought it was fun and it was nice to have a break from a universe ending plot for an expansion.

s!b: the player base acts like the expansion and Wuk Lamat killed their pet and have the most uncharitable takes imaginable because it wasn't exactly what they wanted.

I'm glad you did but I certainly didn't. However I have to admit that the three raid tiers have been the best so far. Not only are the fights fun and actually challenging (I still see 0.1% enrage on m11s some weeks) but the music has also been quite good. That's the only part of the story that I actually cared about. I was really emotionally invested in Eutrope's and Hector's storylines. Too bad they fucked up the landing. And the orange car is almost as bad as the Tesla truck last tier. Why don't we ever get cool mounts?

Now if only party finder didn't suck this late in the tier, I might stop complaining about FFXIV on reclear days - I still do reclears because I like the fights so much and it's not like there's anything else to do right now.

I hate the new alliance raids though because the plot doesn't make sense as I never played FFXI.

When it was new, I remember seeing people complain that it didn't make them feel like EW had, which is so crazy to me. Of course the start of a brand new arc wasn't going to make you feel like the CLIMAX of a ten-year story?? But if you went in with normal expectations--relax, have a fun time--DT was perfectly fine. Wuk Lamat is SO charming; I love her.

That being said, I was really looking forward to a more "normal" adventure, a la HW or STB, so I did think the shift to Alexandria was kind of disappointing. :( The duality and conflict with Alexandria is very cool, and the idea of digital immortality is FANTASTIC for the AI era (genuinely). But I personally don't think either nation got the time it deserved: Tural got sidelined in its own expac to make room for Alexandria, which also doesn't get enough time to feel like a real society, imo.

But none of the expacs are perfect. DT has the bad luck of following immediately after the sustained high of SHB (a triumph of games writing imo) and EW (the emotional climax of the past ten years of storytelling). Regardless of how well or poorly it handled its narrative goals, tbh I think people were always going to be shitheads about it.

When I read "oh you sweet summer child" in A Song of Ice and Fire, I thought it was a great line. (The background here is that in that world, their seasons can last for years, and the line was said to a child who had been born during an extended summer, thus never experienced a winter season.) It was a really good turn of phrase in the context of the book.

The first time I saw it used online, I was like, oh, that's a good reference. I like this.

Years later, having now seen that line used at least 10 million times (an exaggeration, but only a slight one), I have grown to despise it. At this point, 99% of the time, it's being used in a condescending way to belittle someone. And it has gotten so overused it's not even funny.

I think in both the book and the way people use it on the internet, it has both notes of admiration and condescension of innocence. "Aww I would like to live in the world you do but uh the world is worse and I have Seen Things, unfortunately" is the vibe. As the person said above, it's like "Oh, bless your heart" -- can be more condescending or more sweet/affectionate, but it exists in that middle space.

Like, if someone said, "Wait... are furries a sexual thing??" then "Oh you sweet summer child" is an appropriate response. There is unavoidably an element of condescension because the person who says "oh you sweet summer child" knows something that the person they're talking to doesn't know and is posting just to say that, but it doesn't have to necessarily be smug or mean-spirited. It could be affectionate the way Old Nan said it, which is like, "Oh you're so innocent. You won't be that way forever but awww you have not Seen The Things."

As do popular phrases/words tend to go. I sometimes struggle with this phrase for very similar reasons. Admittedly, I've likely used "Oh you sweet summer child" in a condescending way so I know I've contributed to the phrase losing its effect/meaning.

I had no idea this was from Game of Thrones. I just assumed it was another Southern expression like "Bless your heart." It's condescending but gently and a great addition to the language.

I hate it when people are dismissive of other people's fandoms or interests. I understand that sometimes, it's something you just don't care about. But why be a jacks over it? I see this everywhere, sadly. I even see it within my own fandoms, when referring to other fandoms. Or people who don't like a particular ship being dismissive about it. Why is it so hard for so many people to understand that other people care about stuff that they don't care about?

I lie to my friends about how I feel about the movies and books they rec me. At best it's like, it was just mediocre and I couldn't bring myself to finish it but I know you like it, so I read the synopsis on Wikipedia so I could know what you're talking about, and at worst it's like, thanks for the suggestion, I hated it and thought it was really bad and a waste of time and I will never trust your recommendations for anything now. 😔
