When it was new, I remember seeing people complain that it didn't make them feel like EW had, which is so crazy to me. Of course the start of a brand new arc wasn't going to make you feel like the CLIMAX of a ten-year story?? But if you went in with normal expectations--relax, have a fun time--DT was perfectly fine. Wuk Lamat is SO charming; I love her.

That being said, I was really looking forward to a more "normal" adventure, a la HW or STB, so I did think the shift to Alexandria was kind of disappointing. :( The duality and conflict with Alexandria is very cool, and the idea of digital immortality is FANTASTIC for the AI era (genuinely). But I personally don't think either nation got the time it deserved: Tural got sidelined in its own expac to make room for Alexandria, which also doesn't get enough time to feel like a real society, imo.

But none of the expacs are perfect. DT has the bad luck of following immediately after the sustained high of SHB (a triumph of games writing imo) and EW (the emotional climax of the past ten years of storytelling). Regardless of how well or poorly it handled its narrative goals, tbh I think people were always going to be shitheads about it.

My hot take is actually that DT is more evenly written than EW. It doesn't have the lofty peaks of EW's writing, but it also doesn't have the valleys. (And my god, the VALLEYS in EW...)

Yeah I have mixed feelings on both DT and EW but it comes down to like DT (mixed feelings, positive overall) and EW (mixed feelings, negative overall).

Yeah for me it was people somehow expecting another climax to a 10 year story, and they were always going to be disappointed no matter what the story did.

Like I don't think the expac is without any crit at all, like you I think we didn't get enough time in either Tural or Alexandria, but I liked both concepts enough to still have fun with them, and also like you: yeah none of the expansions are perfect but so much of the playerbase can't handle crit of some of the beloved prior expansions. Like STB often gets treated as 'bad' by the playerbase and I enjoyed that one too, it was needed set-up and had some cool and fun moments.

I'm already seeing people starting to pre-glaze Evercold when we don't even know what's going on yet and it's like, guys, I beg of you to not do this to yourselves again because I doubt it'll live up to the hype people are already putting onto that expac.

I'm going to go in hoping to have fun with new zones, new story, and new battle content. I seem to overall have a better time of things by doing that.
