AYRT I read it as condescending because she’s brushing off his fear. The gist is that because he has only been alive during summer, his experiences and feelings are irrelevant. There are other passages in the books that allude to the same thing. I can’t see that as anything but condescending.

nayrt - Interesting, because I don't think she's brushing it off or dismissing it entirely, only trying to (gently!) make the point that whatever level of fear he knows, there are frightening depths and degrees of it that he's not acquainted with because he's never known winter. Because the character is an elderly woman who's in the position of caring for the Stark children, she's speaking to a literal child.
