What are your hobbies?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2026-05-20 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been gaming since I was a kid. I'm a voracious reader (mostly horror). I'm an okay crocheter and a beginner needlefelter.

Reading. Watching my favorite tv/movies. Music (I never go anywhere without my mp3 player). Swimming when I have the time and energy. Does getting massages count as a hobby?

Used to have way more hobbies, but I just don't have the energy or time these days for much of anything.

Yeah, I often have to force myself to crochet or needlefelt every week. I'm always tired.

Also, my number one hobby is being a cat bed.

Lots of games and reading. I want to have physical hobbies where I do something or make something, but I'm so tired all the time. It's less draining to lie in bed and kill pixels or read about someone having adventures.

I get that. I have to force myself every weekend to do some crocheting. And I do like one tiny part at a time. xD

I feel this so much. I used to have more physical hobbies, somewhat. I love to swim, but I haven't been in months. Honestly I barely have the energy to read these days.

Gaming, reading, sewing, quilting, machine embroidery, backpacking, DIY and a touch of woodworking, and Lego (although these days I’m more likely to buy Flego brands like Fun Whole/Lumibricks than actual Lego brand).

Dang! Those must keep you busy. Quilting is one I would love to learn but I don't really have the space for it.

Before I got sick I did so much. Hillwalking, learning falconry, gardening. Now I watch mindless TV (when I've got the concentration) and surf t'internet, and read (when I've got the concentration.) Podcasts and audiobooks should be good, but I listen when I'm lying down to relieve the pain, and usually I drift off to sleep.

But I've recently bought the 2027 Munros calendar - photos of Scottish mountains over 3000 feet. I've already hung it up, to remind me of who I used to be.

And I've recently started writing again in a small way, so that's good.

I'm sorry you've been unable to enjoy your previous hobbies. Have you tried some less strenuous ones you can just do in little bits? Like latch hooking?

Music. Cooking and baking. Reading. Swimming. TV/movies. Museums, especially art and history. I don't happen to have any but I love animals. I used to love going on long walks till my legs got messed up from arthritis.

Baking is one of those hobbies I try to keep up with. But I do it so rarely, I can't really count it.

Art, I love trying new mediums and when I have extra money I like taking beginner classes in a medium I've never done or for a technique I've never used. It's just fun and helps me appreciate others' artwork more to understand more of the methods behind it.

Writing, I used to write a ton of fic, now I write original stuff mostly, I just do it for myself and a few friends who are interested in reading. Very relaxing and cathartic, it feels great to write for a super small audience.

That is fun! It is awesome you have a place where you can take classes. What has been your favorite recently?

I have way too many hobbies, honestly.

Reading, playing video games, cooking/baking, working out (weightlifting/running/hiking/kayaking), enjoying various media (tv/movies/podcasts/what have you). Used to write a bunch, but haven't done it lately - hoping to get back to it soon. Trying different types of art, but I struggle with anything not pixel based. Also going to call categorizing a hobby because I love sorting things and making spreadsheets I inevitably ignore 4 months down the line, lol.

Many of the same hobbies! Gaming-- tabletop being my truest love, but video also being a thing I've enjoyed since I was a kid-- a reader of mostly horror (though mystery, thriller, fantasy, and sci-fi are all fun for me and I sometimes enjoy non-fiction). I don't needlefelt, but I love crochet when my hands cooperate.

My other hobbies are... well, I love baking (and cooking, though that one is also... you know, a thing I do so the family can eat). I custom paint dolls and gaming figures. I draw and write (current obsession for both is a character of my own instead of a fandom for once-- a D&D character I haven't had the chance to play yet and can't even have on deck for if my current guy dies because he'd be a disastrous addition to the party both mechanically and personally). I have not done live theatre in a long time so I have to scratch that itch by watching streams of plays, or improv shows, and just reading plays and thinking about how I'd do them. Or... well, I guess theatre and gaming overlap in terms of embodying a D&D character, when I'm lucky! And I really enjoy cross stitch and sometimes freehand embroidery or small sewing projects, though those all also require my hands to be good.*

*My hand issue is that they get horrid eczema patches, not joint pain-- the eczema CAN make hand movement painful, but the real issue for using yarn, thread, and fabric is that the roughness of my skin snags everything and I feel very Gross if I think that it's going to flake off on my yarn as I go. So while I might be able to draw or even paint while my hands are bad, I can't do fiber arts.

I also collect things-- pins, dice, neat rocks, trivia... and of course collecting craft supplies is its own hobby, though I am currently no-buy on craft supplies until I use up a lot more of what I have, and while journaling for me is LARGELY a functional thing, I still get some hobby enjoyment out of it! And while film is not the same as live theatre I do sometimes enjoy doing a really deep dive analyzing... usually ONE character, the actor's choices, what I think those choices say about the character's internal life, etc, what I might do if I was tasked with bringing that character to life.

Gaming, both video and tabletop. Reading. Yoga. Hiking. Songwriting and playing guitar.

I enjoy writing fiction, but I'm in a bit of a lull with it. I've been so exhausted by work that I can't seem to summon the mental energy to do it properly. I'd like to commit to doing it at least a little bit each week, to make sure I don't totally lose the skill.

What are yours?

Re: Shower thoughts

I sometimes wonder if I have a higher sensitivity to pain because I feel like I'm in pain a lot (migraines, period pain, occasional back pain, chest pain due to hormones etc.) and maybe I'm just oversensitive or actually a lower sensitivity to pain because I see friends and family describe similar levels of pain and they go to the doctor for it when that's just kind of my normal. Especially since I've been in frequent mid level to severe pain since getting my first migraines since I was about 7 and I'm just used to it.
