What media has disappointed you recently?

Been trying to get into some new podcasts. Tried Behind the Bastards and it just wasn't good. The knowledge presented was shallow, it was edited poorly, and the guests were awful.

Star Wars: Master of Evil. I've loved most of the recent Star Wars books, but this one was so disappointing.

Ok, tbf it was a 99¢ audiobook of the first three books in a LitRPG series so it really is my own fault for thinking it would be anything other than what it is. But in my defense, I don’t mind the bad writing or ridiculous premise. To me, those are features, not bugs. But the MC is extremely sexist at the beginning and it’s so severe that I’m not sure I can keep with it long enough to find out if he develops beyond that.

Behind the Bastards is so hit or miss IMO.

Mary Roach writes a lot of highly regarded nonfiction so I tried it and... yeesh, her writing style just is not my thing.

my best friend recommended Peaky Blinders, probably because it's a period piece about gangsters and she knows I love Boardwalk Empire but PB just didn't do it for me.

Years ago, I was excited for Peaky Blinders. I also enjoyed Boardwalk Empire a lot and I've always loved Cillian Murphy in anything I watched him in. IIRC I watched until close to the end of season 2 or partway through season 3. None of the characters really captured me and it felt more like a chore to watch the show than was enjoyable to watch.

A Chinese BL webnovel that started out with a rare subgenre that I like (artifact/weapon crafting) but apparently the author decided halfway through she wanted to write a different novel and threw the main character in a different world with a completely different plot. Which would be fine in a 300 chapter + novel but this one got a bit over a hundred, and the other world arc still isn't over 3/4ths to the end so I don't have any hope it'll go back to the original plot in any satisfactory manner.

New Zealand Spy. It was recc'd by a friend, and I was interested in the concept, so I was prepared to enjoy it! But as I watched the first ep, I found myself hating one of the MMCs so bad I just have not bothered going back to watch any more episodes. :(

Based on Secret #1: What opening credits/themes do you think are especially good?

(Anonymous) 2026-05-22 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Twilight Zone, after the first season (the first season did not have the iconic theme music)
Batman: The Animated Series
Batman (1966)
Spider-Man (1967): well, the animation was as poor as the rest of the series, but dat theme song...
Cowboy Bebop

There's more, I'm sure, but that's enough for a start.

Agree on Twilight Zone and Cowboy Bebop. Game of Thrones and Westworld were also great (especially since GoT would update).

Runaways (Marvel)- just an instrumental but I never skipped it
Roswell - Here With Me by Dido

Boardwalk Empire
CSI (either original or New York)
The Munsters was a sucky show (white trash Addamses) but their theme song was a bop

Ooh yeah, big agree on Twilight Zone, BtAS, and Cowboy Bebop.

I love the Jeeves and Wooster theme. The X-Files as well. I'm fond of the Murder, She Wrote opening. MASH, Star Trek TOS, and Hogan's Heroes...

I love the Jeeves and Bertie credits too! it establishes mood perfectly (which is what a theme should do) and I love art deco.

The Edward Gorey PBS Mystery opening theme is top tier.

True Detective season 1, Twin Peaks, The X-Files, Malcolm in the Middle, Futurama, Dexter, Six Feet Under. Not a fan of Game of Thrones but the intro is a banger.

Bojack Horseman. The opening changed every season to reflect the characters and plots that were featured. The special one they did for the show-within-a-show, "Philbert," is a dead on sendup of pretentious prestige dramas.

While I never liked the show, I still think the GoT intro was pretty iconic.
