(Anonymous) 2026-05-22 08:13 am (UTC)(link)She's talked about what happened to her a lot in her videos and obviously, that's very much from her perspective/her portrayal of what went down, but whenever I independently run across a Contrapoints hater in the wild, they very much match her account of what happened, namely they're just the kind of woker-than-thou internet yeller type of leftist who, whenever the left has a popular and charismatic figure, feels they must do everything in their power to tear them down and that this is how leftism wins, somehow. They're the kind of people who drive the exhausting, constant, self-destructive tall poppy syndrome / circular firing squad tendencies of the left.
Very different figure with quite different (although still lefty) politics, but you see the same thing with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez haters, who for some reason can't think of a more damaging and hateful person than AOC and spend all their energy attacking her.
I'm not saying either Contrapoints or AOC is perfect person with perfect politics, but they both definitely have WAY better politics than 90% of the U.S., but more than that (1) the left needs to be able to accept AT LEAST the amount of difference in opinion that Contrapoints and AOC represent if it wants to get anything done, and (2) notably, the *main reason* people attack these two is because they are prominent, charming, attractive, and really good at persuading people to be leftists.
Anyway, in Contrapoints' case, she's made some tweets mildly ridiculing the increasing tendency among the trans community to not require either physical or social transition in order to count in as trans, and was friendly with an old-fashioned trans person who had similar more gatekeepy opinions about how much gender dysphoria you need to experience to count as a trans person which obviously puts both of them out of step with younger trans people. Like, I get why her opinions are considered outre among the trans community but this very much is an obscure internecine leftist fight; mainstream society does not give a fuck on how much gender dysphoria you experience to be considered a trans person -- they hate all trans people and any whiff of "gender ideology."
But those opinions were considered reactionary enough that people basically started portraying Contrapoints as a snake in the grass -- someone who seems woke and leftist but is deeply reactionary and hateful and someone using their platform to enact great harm on trans people etc. etc.
She went quiet for a while while this was going on and while people were putting pressure on her fellow Breadtube creators to cut ties with her, then came back and talked about how the experience affected and shook her and then eventually went on to make more video essays doing leftist theory/book analysis much in line with what she was doing before. Her politics have not changed.
This apparently is being portrayed here as "Contrapoints being a grifter that cares more about fame and money" (presumably because she went back to posting video essays despite how miserable an experience people made it for her) and "Contrapoints is a normie lib and contrarian who moved on to a new audience." She really didn't. She no longer feels beholden to the portion of her fanbase who led a vicious campaign her against when she had a political disagreement with them, and she made a video criticizing the worst and most vicious tendencies of the left, which obviously the worst leftists you know interpreted as her doubling down on her reactionary bigotry and moving right, when her politics haven't changed. (Which, by the way, is wild -- most of the time, people who get viciously cancelled by the left do start palling around with fascists (see Laci Green, for example), but I stress that this DIDN'T happen in Contrapoints' case, despite people's depictions otherwise.) Being able to criticize the circular firing squad tendencies of the left is not only 100% compatible with being a leftist but also I think sometimes necessary to keep your sanity in this portion of the political spectrum.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-22 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)There were a lot of people on twitter etc stating that they were cancelling their patreon sub just because of her take on Palestine, talking about disillusionment yadda yadda having their eyes opened to the fact that she's never been a leftist but a centrist all along blablablah.
I think OP is referring to this incident in particular.
(*) I don't even disagree with her, but I do think posting those screenshots at that time was a HUGE mistake from her part.
