Fandom Vents

Is something in your fandom bothering you? Get it off your chest!

Def. something I've noticed with the newer wave of people in fandom is that they... all seem to want permission for things? Like, 'is it okay' 'but it's not canon' and it's like they never got the memo that fanworks have no rules, fanworks need no rules, do whatever you want in your story/art to your heart's contentment! It's just strange, and off-putting, and especially exasperating when they comment on OTHER people's fic/art with 'but this ship isn't canon!' Like, obviously. That's the whole point. Exploration?? Break things? Fix things? Have fun???

I've seen this, too, so I have a certificate of official permission that I post whenever we get these on reddit.

Given the behavior of a small group of folks who have been... um... shall we say... aggressively possibilities-averse these last few years (and most of us do not agree with them), I'm not surprised new folks are asking for permission now. It sucks because they shouldn't have to ask, it's fandom and it's all for fun.

(Okay, I'm likely just assuming that's the reason. It's possible they really don't know if it's okay. But yes, it's totally okay!)

I agree with that attitude, but I'm a fandom dinosaur and I dunno... the bigger and more mainstream fandom has gotten, it seems like there are always people who try and impose rules so they can separate fans and fanworks into different acceptable and unacceptable categories.

??
Which attitude do you mean exactly? Not trying to be rude, just genuinely asking.

Talon Warburton, the would-be nepobaby son of Patrick Warburton, has been in the Dungeon Crawler Carl fandom for the last year trying unsuccessfully to monetize his connection to the inspiration for Carl’s voice and the actual voice of Carl’s dad. It’s cringey but I firmly believe in letting people do whatever harmless thing they want. His cosplay attempts have been laughably bad because he isn’t actually a fan of the books.

But now he’s trying to rally fan support for him to be cast as Carl. Fuck no. One, he’s too old. He’s already 34 (Carl is 27) and would be closer to 40 before the cameras turned on the first time. He’d be nearly 50 by the end of the run. So on age alone he’s a terrible pick.

But also, he lacks talent. His resume is rather telling but if you need further context: he often tries to join the fandoms for the few jobs he gets and the reception is lukewarm at best.

The thing is, his reasoning of “I’m the son of the guy who played Carl’s dad” is gaining traction with the less intellectually gifted fans. And he’s using his dad in his videos to get more recognition. It’s honestly depressing because I know he won’t get the part but the idiots who buy his schtick are going to complain forever about whoever does get the part.

Bonus: I’m pretty sure Talon is only getting work now because his dad finally decided to pull strings for him once Talon’s baby was on the way.

Idk. Just everything about the guy bothers me whenever he pops up in the fandom spaces. At first a bunch of us thought he was a fan and that was cool. But nope, just a 34 year old man trying to use his father’s name and connections to replicate his father’s success, totally blind to the need for talent.

...wow, that's the saddest attempt at being a nepo baby I've ever seen. I think your dad has to be more famous than that OR you have to be fishing in a much smaller pool for that to work.

I hate how on Facebook groups dedicated to one part of a particular canon will be half posts bashing a different part of canon. I came here to love on this thing we love, not hate on that other part. If you want to hate on that other part, create a group about hating on that other part.

Specifically can't there be placed to love on the Star Wars EU without bashing on the new canon? Can't we talk about the OT without hating on everything that came after? Even the sequel focused group often ends up with posts about how the sequels clearly did it so much better than the prequels or the EU. Just so tired of it.

It happens in other fandoms too. I had to leave this Deep Space 9 group because we kept getting posts hating on the newer shows and not being related to DS9 at all, and the mods did nothing.

And I hate in general how everything is a competition today. I'm so sick of articles about one thing have to talk about how good it is by explaining how it is so much better than this other thing. Why can't we talk about the qualities of one thing without having to bash another thing? Not everything is a competition.

Not a fan of the way some indie animation fans feel the need to attack the creators whenever they don't like something about the show. Whatever happened to venting in private/among other fans? Why do they need to harass creators? It's one sure way to not have anything nice.

This has become a thing in a lot of fandoms. People take it personally when creators make things they don't like. The absolute hate spewed at actors, writers, etc. just for being a part of something that a certain group of fans decided was bad is just awful.

Re: Fandom Vents

This is the direct result of tearing down the fourth wall. And the worst part is that the people who take the worst of the abuse had nothing to do with that. No one is allowed to be unreachable, the studios don’t allow it. Animators, writes, actors, directors…everyone is required to maintain a social media presence. Some big names can opt out of course but even some of them don’t have that option.

MTE, bring back the fourth wall.

Like, I have my gripes with shitty writers and shitty writing, but... attacking people on social media and/or sending death threats? (And to be fair, harassment happened before social media too... just ask any soap opera actor... but now it just seems normalized.)

Entitlement, pure and simple and the sad thing is that it works so the worst fans get rewarded for their shit. :\

i HAAAATE that OPLA is overtaking One Piece fandom. These two versions of One Piece are even further apart from one another than the LOTR movies were from Tolkien's books. I HATE the live action. It's badly-written and watching it feels like watching a bunch of half-assed wannabe cosplayers pretend to act out a cliffs notes version of the story. I knew it was bad when Oda wouldn't sign off publicly on the first season, and even if he did (as rumored) take a heavier hand in the second season, doesn't change the fact that it's all wrong, and I'm eternally angry that people who wouldn't give the manga a second glance are gushing about how much they love the LA version. I hate it I hate it I hate it. I hate all of it. Vivi is ugly. Nami is ugly. They should have shifted their filming to let Jamie Lee Curtis be involved (I love Katey Segal but she is NOT Kureha fuck off). The CGI Chopper is as awful as I expected it to be. Kill it with fire.

You entitled to your opinion, everyone's taste is different, blah blah
but
VIVI IS UGLY??

I firmly believe that adaptations require their own fanspace and should not be in the source material’s existing fandom. I was in a fandom that had two popular adaptations come out in the span of a few years totaling five waves of new adaptation fans taking over the fandom every time a new movie or season was released.this was back in the LJ days and I’m still salty that despite taking a vote the mods decided to allow works based on the adaptations.

Re: Fandom Vents

(Anonymous) 2026-05-26 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
I did not think anyone who is into that particular manga would have the balls to call anybody ugly. Wow, you have confounded my expectations.

Re: Fandom Vents

(Anonymous) 2026-05-26 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, if you like the art in the OG you don't get to call anything ugly lmao. Especially as you've singled out two women who are gorgeous.

But stay mad it's popular, I hope it continues to infest you precious OG spaces because you deserve it.

Re: Fandom Vents

(Anonymous) 2026-05-26 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, like I understand not liking when adaptation infects original spaces. And I actually like OP art. But this are extremely beautiful women.

Re: Fandom Vents

In what world is OPLA taking over the fandom? In the OP fandom, OPLA is incredibly niche (aside from two weeks when it's coming out but we're well past that). Where are you hanging out that this is an issue?

I'm currently enjoying the BloodyMary crossover ship fanbase on Tumblr, but every so often there's someone who is clearly annoyed with having to use the filter tags and has to announce how much they hate the ship or one of the movies that are involved in the crossover.
It's making me miss Livejournal communities. Hell, its even making me miss 2010s Deviantart fangroups!
