I never bought Mark Addy as Robert Baratheon. It isn't the height thing that a lot of fans complain about, it is just that his face is far too friendly. He's got such a friendly, but somehow also sad, face. All his roles have that warmth that no amount of swearing and slapping and yelling and bad writing can compensate for. Maybe I'm just into Mark Addy?

Isn't that how Robert is supposed to be in his later years? An affable, lazy drunk.

Right? Lol...

My feeling about Mark Addy as Robert Baratheon is that he's a fine actor, but Robert was supposed to be a large, athletic guy who looked like a quintessential warrior in his youth, who'd obviously let himself go with drinking and food. Basically a Henry VIII type. Addy does not look like that.

??? He absolutely does in that role. Mark Addy himself looks like a strong, affable guy, but you can see just in the picture of the secret that for Robert they've done the make-up of someone in seriously poor health. Addy's face is round and cheerful, Robert's is sagging and angry.

Sorry, I don't think he looks like a warrior gone to fat. I think he just looks like a big guy who's always had a round face and a dad bod.

I mean, I live in a rural area where sports are a huge thing, and I'm surrounded by men who were (Australian) football champions in their younger days, still have very physical jobs in farming, and drink a lot, and look pretty much like that. Face gets round, shoulders stay big, stomach spreads. The only difference is that the ones I know are all sunburned and starting to get skin cancers.

I see what you mean, but I feel like it fit the character for me that he came across as a friendly, warm person with a terrible temper, some real people are that way.

No, I think he was perfect in the role apart from maybe height. He was one of those men who is wonderful to his friends and everyone calls "a good bloke" but he's an absolute tyrant to people he considers beneath him, like women, or any sons who are not exactly like him.
