I hate how JK Rowling's very existence seems to have poisoned the fantasy genre. I really do.

I think they're saying JKR and the Harry Potter books' influence on the genre has poisoned it, because their overwhelming success has led many authors to chase the same success by aping Harry Potter. I think Anon is reading other books but feels they're trying to be Harry Potter instead of being more original or branching out.

Or maybe that's just my take and experience? I had to give up YA fantasy for a while after Harry Potter, because it felt like everything was trying to be about magic schools, abused Chosen Ones, etc. It was irritating.

Variety in the YA fantasy has improved a little, but not by much, imo.
