I hate how JK Rowling's very existence seems to have poisoned the fantasy genre. I really do.

nayrt

I think they're saying JKR and the Harry Potter books' influence on the genre has poisoned it, because their overwhelming success has led many authors to chase the same success by aping Harry Potter. I think Anon is reading other books but feels they're trying to be Harry Potter instead of being more original or branching out.

Or maybe that's just my take and experience? I had to give up YA fantasy for a while after Harry Potter, because it felt like everything was trying to be about magic schools, abused Chosen Ones, etc. It was irritating.

Variety in the YA fantasy has improved a little, but not by much, imo.

It...hasn't?

Harry Potter is really its own thing, and even at the time the big names in non-YA fantasy were either well established or starting up - ASOIAF, Mistborn series, Kingkiller Chronicles. Nothing to do with HP at all. And now? Fantasy as a genre is much broader and has moved on. Romantasy is the hot new subgenre, and again, nothing to do with HP.

Personally I wish romantasy would stop being the big thing so we can go back to actually interesting fantasy. Romantasy is almost as boring as straight up romance to me.

Yeah, I hear you. It'll fade eventually, just like urban fantasy did after the 90s.

Especially the dark romantasy abuse glorification shit.

There's so many fantasy series or standalones out there across multiple sub-genres.

It has a zillion different stories to choose from that haven't been tainted by Harry Potter.

The ones I like in particular are Eric Carter, Rivers of London, The Kingkiller series, A Song of Ice and Fire, Echoes of the Fall, Discworld, The Black Badge series, The DEDA Files, The Sunder City series and The Hexologists.

Others that come to mind that I'm not keen on or haven't read are Percy Jackson, the Stormlight Archives, Mistborn, The Grishaverse, anything by Tolkien, The Dresden Files, The Witcher series, The Belgariad, Wheel of Time, His Dark Materials, Eragon and its sequels, the Abhorsen books, Artemis Fowl, Dragonlance, Shannara, Hard Magic, literally any of the tik-tok popular Romantasy books around these days with titles like A [Noun] of [Noun] and [Noun], that series about riding dragons that isn't Pern, even The Chronicles of Narnia.

There's so much and none of them are associated with or even anything like Harry Potter, even if, like with The Kingkiller books, you can sum it up with 'orphan boy attends a magic school'.

And hey, even if you still feel that way, there's always science fiction. That's fun too.

If anything, I’d say Sarah J. Maas poisoned fantasy.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-30 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
There's a stronger argument for this, IMO. Post Harry Potter, we didn't get a big blow-up of wizard fantasy YA the way we have sexy elves and toxic romance romantasy. But really, Maas is only continuing what Laurell K. Hamilton began...

I agree. Modern "fantasy" has largely transformed into "romantasy" and I personally can't stand it. I don't mind/sometimes enjoy a little bit of romance in my books, but whenever it crosses the line to become focused on the romance, I lose interest. And that is what is going on these days.

You’re delusional. I know a bunch of people are going to come at me for being mean but seriously you’re fucked in the head.

They have an unhealthy obsession for sure.

+1

At this point, I think a lot of the secrets about this topic are pure bait.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-30 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
No, it hasn't...?

The industry has moved on: idk where you've been, but if people aren't talking about Sarah J. Maas and her books, they're wanking over Brandon Sanderson and his books.

Hate to say it, but... you need to grow up and read books for grown ups and stop clinging to YA fiction for kids.

I mean I guess you could make an argument that Manacled happened because of HP.

But yeah, for HP inspirations... all I can think of is Percy Jackson and Series of Unfortunate Events, which is a stretch and I wouldn't agree with that argument.

OTOH I'm an adult with no kids who doesn't read YA so I'm not well versed on the trends.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-30 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
can you provide any specific examples as to how she has poisoned the fantasy genre, or is this just yet another tired wank bait secret?
