When I was a teen (not that long ago tbh), I was overjoyed when I saw people that old (sorry!) participating in fandom. Like this series about running hedgehogs battling a fat man was cool enough for someone to stick with it that long?! And write novel-quality fics for? When they could be making cashmoney by writing original works?! What an honor!
Not to mention, you don't have to tell people your exact age if you don't want to.
People probably assume I'm a middle aged adult on Mastodon until I bring up things like exams, because that's how old most other people there are. Reality is, I'm barely halfway through college. Hell, I've felt self-conscious about my younger age on there, but no one's ever been condescending about it so far. You tend to suffer more in your head than in reality.
Go get your dreams, OP.

(Anonymous) 2026-06-02 04:12 am (UTC)(link)This! I had a tendency as a teen to get into stuff that came out when I was either too young to be aware of it or not even born yet, so it was great to be able to be among people who'd been in the fandom for years/since the beginning. They could teach me about the history of the things we both liked, they knew about/had access to all the fic/interviews/fan sites/etc that they were happy to share with myself and other newer fans, and they were just plain happy to see newer and younger fans like myself in the fandom, 'cause hey, it meant this thing they loved still had staying power and could still gain new fans all these years later.
I learned a lot from being in fan spaces where I got to interact with older fans, and I want to be that welcoming and supportive to newer/younger fans in the fandoms I'm in in turn. I'm glad that people, of any age, can find joy and fun in a show or movie or band or book series, and can find others who love that stuff as much as they do. This whole "there's an age limit to being in fandom" mindset feels so limiting and boring and sad to me.
