I'd rather read my horror than watch it. Easier to avoid nightmares.

For me it is because I don't like a whole lot of visual gore. I like horror, but a lot of gore grosses me out when it is visual, and most horror seems to have a lot of gore.

Same! I love both but horror books affect me far less.

I feel the same way but for the opposite reason. My imagination can come up with very freaky visuals that sometimes are more effective than what special effects people do. (I still wish there was animated Lovecraft for that reason.)

I genuinely believe that participation in fandom ought to mean you consume media critically. Too many fans just... don't. The are media illiterate.

Yeah, sometimes people aren't fans of the thing actually is, but of what they think it is. See some The Boys fans....

Fans always accuse other fans of being illiterate. I wonder sometimes if that means we’re all illiterate.

(Anonymous) 2026-06-02 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Put more funding into humanities education (づ ᴗ _ᴗ)づ♡

Seriously, though. Some people aren't wired that way and some people don't want to bother with that kind of stuff. It sucks, but it's just the way things are.

Nah. I just avoid the ones I can’t have a rational conversation with. Illiteracy doesn’t mean stupid. I’m in a book fandom full of people who are illiterate and it’s actually kinda great talking with them most of the time. It’s especially great watching them learn and grow.

Plus, I don’t see anything wrong with enjoying something without studying it critically. The only negative with someone just enjoying something is that gatekeepers get huffy and make secrets about them.

(Anonymous) 2026-06-02 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
IMO, there's a distressingly high number of people who are illiterate, period. Their reading comprehension is generally so poor that they're not able to read a passage and get anything out of it but the most obvious, superficial message. Nuances evade their grasp, the point goes whoosh over their heads. So with other forms of media... yeah, same thing. Blockbuster movies are so basic and shallow-plotted now because people don't notice the lack of depth or development so long as stuff goes boom. Characterization and character development doesn't matter to audiences who never picked up on that stuff anyway. Plot holes? What plot holes?

pengilly: Surge the Tenrec with the bisexual flag (Default)

[personal profile] pengilly 2026-06-02 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
True. The worst bit is that some fans are so media illiterate that they'll throw the term at someone else for no reason other than that someone liked a thing they disliked (or vice versa), disagrees with popular fanon, etc.

And fans seem to forget that you can critique something and still be a fan of it. Opinions on media get really polarized.

I recently got back into an old fandom of mine for no particular reason other than that it randomly sprung up and kind of stuck.

Now, I’ve decided I’d like to finally tell a fan fic (either written or as a comic) that’s been sitting in the back of my brain for the past 14-15 years.

I’m pushing 40 years old and the feeling of “You’re too old for this shit” is kicking me hard in the shins. It’s also too specific to my tastes that the fandom wouldn’t like it.

Maybe it should just remain as fleeting thought in my brain...

I've recently gotten into a new fandom for the first time in a long time, which is awesome and very exciting. It's also the fist time in a loooooong time where I'm shipping two ostensibly straight guys. There's all the stereotypical stuff: the longing looks, grand gestures, meaningful conversations, random touchy-feely-ness, other characters calling them a couple, comments from the actors, etc. but I know there's zero chance it's anything other than queerbaiting. I've gotten way too spoiled by shipping canon queer characters who did/probably will/at least could become canon, and I'm not sure I can handle them eventually getting serious with other love interests [they've both had love interests, but none that seemed endgame].

sb I know I'm being ridiculously dramatic.

I think the American remake of the ring is better than the Japanese original.

I always feel guilty unfollowing people on Twitch, especially if they're smaller streamers. But I only want to follow people who I actually watch. So when people shift their focus to other games than the ones I enjoy watching, I unfollow. I make sure to do it while they're offline so they don't see their follower count go down, especially if they're a small streamer. I just feel bad.
