I tried to go back and rewatch Top Model for the laughs and nostalgia but damn....the faphobia was OUTRAGEOUS. I literally could not deal. That shit is poison to the brain and self esteem

Shit, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Even with my poor memory of it, I'm pretty sure there's a good helping of racism (and/or colorism) and ableism at the very least. Plus, you know, the general sabotage and undercutting and arguable emotional abuse.

I can't believe I watched multiple seasons of that show.

Oh yeah that show was messed up. I used to watch it during my peak ED days for "thinspiration."

What really disturbed me as an adult was the ways the show turned sexual assault and/or sexual harassment into drama, mostly in which the women were given little to no sympathy.

Cycle 1 Adrianne is groped by a stranger while doing a Go-See and no one intervenes

Cycle 2 Shandi was drunk and the show filmed her rape, and only decided to cut most of it out due to fears of the FCC fining them after the Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake Superbowl performance. The show played the whole thing out as Shandi being a reckless slut who cheated on her boyfriend.

Cycle 4 Keenyah was being sexually harassed and groped by a creepy male model who had been pursuing her even after she told him she wasn't interested and she had a boyfriend. When she spoke up, she was blamed for being unprofessional.

Uuugh I won't list all the disturbing shit that went down on the show because it upsets me.

And I hate that Ken Mok excuses it as "we're a documentary crew, we film without intervention". Like, shut the fuck up!! ANTM is a cheap fucking entertainment crew who can create excitement and drama without having to exploit these eager (and mostly from poor backgrounds) young women ANTM are responsible for. The safety of their contestants should have been their number 1 priority, but instead ANTM producers seemed delighted when the women were in danger.

ANTM was a comfort show I'd watch on repeat. One where I didn't take it too seriously and mostly enjoyed all the camp, overexaggerated drama, and pretty photos and runway shows. But after some time of not watching the show and being in my 30s when I tried to rewatch, I was horrified and really sad to see how these eager young women were all exploited and harmed.

But on the positive side, I was so grateful to see the same exploited young women as full grown adults being interviewed about their experiences, and they were honest. I'm especially so parasocially proud of Lisa D'Amato and Angelea Preston for continually speaking up against the show's exploitation of the contestantants. They both were done so dirty by the show, and they have created ways for former contestants to have a voice because the showrunners for ANTM sure do love pretending to know nothing. Tyra especially being all "I wasn't there for that, I had no idea." Despite footage of her back in the 2000s proudly saying she's an executive producer and she's in the editing room, editing all the footage and talking about what she likes and doesn't like.

the thing with shandi was so gross. i remember watching it as a kid and thinking it was so scandalous that she cheated on her boyfriend like that, because that's how it was edited. even with the documentaries that have come out recently, the people involved have put the blame on other people (mostly tyra) or chalked it up to "being of the times," like it was ever perfectly okay to film someone get sa'd and turn the other cheek?
