Re: I have a question...

I'm no expert or anything but I think part of the reason people aren't as up in arms about the VFX heavy films is because not everyone can do them. AI's environmental impacts would be far, far less if the use of AI was, say, kept for strictly medical/research purposes by actual scientists and not available for every single person to use with very little effort.

But AI is around and anyone can use it, and all the big players are making it as easy as possible to use it, whether or not you want it. AI is everywhere. VFX is out of reach of the vast majority of people. I wouldn't know where to start with special effects but when I use microsoft for work, copilot is right there. (And I hate it. Work won't let me disable it.)

Dude. It's easy to use because the big players are in a testing and data collection phase. This technology will not be available for entertainment and cheating for much longer, and your options for working without it are drawing to a close.

I just don't understand the hatred directed at casual users. These corporations own the government, and they're going to achieve their goals no matter what. I mean, you do understand that, right? You understand that everyone could collectively stop using AI right now, and it wouldn't matter. ...Right??

DA but dude, I don't believe anything is inevitable and even if it was, that doesn't mean I'm gonna bend over and give up.

You need to learn about supply and demand, my guy.

AYRT

Let me break it down for you in terms of supply and demand.

Companies have invested huge amounts of money in AI so they can downsize their labor force.

AI corporations have used this money to build data centers.

If you think AI corps are out there building data centers to meet the demands of everyday people who are using it mostly for free... then I don't really know how to respond to that.

I despise AI. I hate that I can't even use Google in "regular" mode now. I open up Word and see Copilot, and I feel murderous. But I'm not so incredibly clueless that I think casual users are the problem or even a measurable percentage of the problem.

But what about Googleing? Does it take up less processing power than requesting something from Grok or Claude or Sora?

DA

Yes. It also takes less than half the water.

Is this an honest question or trolling? Googling is not remotely the same as inputting a prompt for an LLM. Search engines index pages discoverable in public, LLMs generate results and use power to write a response for you.

This is an honest, good faith question. I'm genuinely trying to understand.

Fair enough.

Yes. Metaphorically, imagine you go into a library and want to look something up.

A non-AI web search is like the librarian that has indexed where tons of books are and if you ask her for something, she will show you where to find what people consider the most relevant books that other people have written about the subject. She will give you the whole book and tell you who wrote it, but not claim to know anything about the subject itself or put words in the mouths of those authors, she just knows where to find the books and can show you.

AI is like sending a student to spend time and energy skimming every single book they can find that others have already written, cutting out words and sentences and pages, and sticking them all back into a new book for you to read, where every so often things make no sense or are straight up wrong because the student isn't actually an expert on the subject you're looking for, she's just arranging things written by other people (who may not even be experts themselves, how would the student know) into some semblance of text that makes sense to bullshit a paper that sounds authentic.

You can kind of see how the 2nd way uses up way more energy than the 1st way, I hope

Thank you, that metaphor really helped.

This is a good helpful answer. Well done.
