I know a couple fans of the book who told me how great it was, but when I asked them about specific scenes that stood out to me, personally, they confessed that they hadn't actually read the series- at best, they'd skimmed it.

So, maybe, it isn't just the haters jumping on bandwagons? Or do the pro-Twilight ppl have legitimet excuses, since the book is clearly so awesome?

Alternatively, I had a friend try to introduce me to the book by summarizing what sounded like a truly epic book, about a vampire that falls in love with a young woman. But her blood calls to him, so in order to resist her, he ran off to Italy. However, she was desperate to be with him and chased after him, demanding he turn her. But turning human lover never turns out the way you want it to, so he continuously spurned her.

I'm paraphrasing something I heard years ago- trust me, the version my friend told me sounded great. I was instantly depressed when I found out our 'young woman' protagonist was an angsty teenager in high school.
