You don't need to hate Twilight just because it's popular BECAUSE there are so many "legit reasons" to dislike it.

People who hate it just because it's popular are trying way too hard.

I read the first book. Somewhat enjoyed.

Read the second and the third in one sitting, did NOT expect the series to turn out so lame. And horribly written. COULD NOT make it through the fourth book.

I hated the series because Stephanie Meyer was a bad writer, a horrible plot maker, and the most uptight bitch of fiction I've ever seen.

[identity profile] loony-moony.livejournal.com 2009-12-18 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, I wish the only reason I had to hate this stupid fucking anti-feminist franchise was because it was so fucking popular. STFU.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2009-12-18 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I get your point, anon. There are a lot of people who bandwagon jump on anything -- like or dislike. It happens all the time, with any media. Personally, I can't stand people who hate something because it's popular -- I think it's a very silly/stupid reason to hate something, because they could be missing out on something they'd really love if they'd give it a chance.

Me?

I've read all four books and seen both movies so I would know what I was talking about, and for the most part, I strongly dislike them. I won't give you a long speech why (I'm sure you don't want it anyway), but suffice it to say that I, at least, am not one of those bandwagon jumpers.

But I know some people who are, and even though I dislike Twilight myself, I've still gotten in arguments with them over how they can't just restate others' opinions as their own without having even glanced at the source material. High-and-mighty of me? Maybe. But I think it just makes people look ignorant when they say they absolutely despise something and yet have never even tried it, instead preferring to regurgitate opinions. It's not "cool," it's just dumb.

Eh, I think it's more like people are more vocal about hating Twilight because it's popular, not that people hate it because it's popular. If people could watch tv or browse websites without a thousand references to Twilight, I'm sure there wouldn't be quite so much hate for it as there is.

Personally, I was offended that such a poorly written novel got so much praise. I wouldn't really care if it wasn't shoved down my throat for so long I'm looking at you, MuchMusic.

I don't hate it because it's popular... I knew about the books way before they were although I did only look at them after they broke big. I couldn't make it past the blurb. The story itself is just so bad that I don't even know where to begin.

[identity profile] foxybanana.livejournal.com 2009-12-18 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
the errors in this secret just made me lol at it some more.

My thoughts on yaoi.

[identity profile] 13chapters.livejournal.com 2009-12-18 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to give you my most objective response, anon.

First of all, I was serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in rural Eastern Europe when the Twilight books started coming out. When I got back, I went to visit the bookstore I used to work at, and there was this big Twilight display. I'd never heard of them and was curious because they seemed so popular. I was too busy with beginning my masters degree, but I wanted to read them. Although I'm now 31, I still enjoy YA books, especially fantasy books. I had my copy of HP#7 shipped to me in my village in the Balkans.

So anyway, last winter break, when I finally had some spare time, I got around to reading the first Twilight book. Keep in mind none of my friends had read it (I'm not in the target age range, we're all too busy reading for school) and I had only the vaguest idea what it was about.

It is TERRIBLE. As in, EXTREMELY POORLY WRITTEN. Bella is a VERY BORING PROTAGONIST. Edward is HIGHLY UNLIKEABLE.

This, my anon friend, is why people dislike the Twilight books. Not because they're popular. Because they suck. Nevertheless, I do see why they appeal to teenage kids. Hell, I can see my fourteen-year-old self liking them.

I don't judge you for liking them, anon. My own taste when I was a teenager was...not great. But it is a misconception to think that people dislike the books solely because they are popular.

[identity profile] sunni-sideup.livejournal.com 2009-12-18 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I could not agree with you more. The books aren't for everyone. I mean, that's a given. You can't please everyone.

But some people just seem to hate it based on what other people say about it. So it's a cycle of no one even giving it a chance. And it's just really funny to see how defensive people get about their hatred.

Why can't people just like what they want and not be judged for it?

No, not at all. I've liked a lot of mainstream things over the years, even franchises with huge followings, like the Harry Potter, Pokemon, etc. The Twilight series still sucks big time. Sorry

Also, did you ever stop and think that, maybe, just because something is popular, doesn't mean that it's of good quality? And that maybe, if someone doesn't like it, they have a good reason not to other than "it's popular"?

(Anonymous) 2009-12-18 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I read the first book and didn't seem to be that impressed with the book. I knew a lot of people liked the book series, but I wasn't sure why. Did I miss something? Is it possible for me to read a book and not care at all about any of the characters or what had happened and what will happen in the future books? And then the movie came out. And then it was all anyone could talk about. And then the cast of the movie had to be on the cover of my favorite magazine every other issue, not to mention get a full page's worth of "news feed" on the franchise every issue. And then people began comparing it to the Harry Potter series. That was when my mere non interest turned into hate. I've since learned to cope with it all. I try to distance myself from Twilight and it's fanbase when possible, but I do occasionally moan about what I do not like about that particular franchise.

My personal trauma story aside, I get what you mean, anon. There are people out there who say things such as "I hate getting into stuff that everyone else gets into so yeah, I'm soooo not into 'Twilight'. It's so lame." They are trying too hard, and it's a bit sad that people waste the energy hate on something for the sake of hating/being "cooler" than the bandwagoners. At the end of the day, it's kind of funny that everyone takes all this so serious. LOLS for everyone.

[identity profile] shrocomemos.livejournal.com 2009-12-18 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm usually not vocal about hating Twilight unless someone asks my opinion of it, mainly because I don't want to be labeled as a bandwagon jumper even though I read and hated the book before anybody even knew about it. I was actually the outcast at that time for hating it since my best friend loved it and lent it out to our entire group of friends who ended up liking it.

Just checked the date of publication and yeah, I read it a few months after it came out.

Honestly, I wouldn't care so much if I weren't still in high school and had to see Robert Pattinson's face plastered on every girl's bag. It's a little creepy.

[identity profile] mimes.livejournal.com 2009-12-18 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I have been known to like popular things and I read/hated Twilight before anyone else I knew even read it.

'sides, even if the main reason for people hating it was because it's popular, it wouldn't change the fact that the books are shit.

[identity profile] box-life.livejournal.com 2009-12-18 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of us hate them because they're fucking awful. I like plenty of mainstream things, just not that one.

[identity profile] yohkochan.livejournal.com 2009-12-18 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of people are ragging on this one, but I for one totally agree with it. I know TONS of people that hate Twilight and can't give me a decent reason to. I actually read the books because it infuriated me when people judged something without knowing what it was.
(And I did think they were bad. Actually, I kind of liked Eclipse and Breaking Dawn which yes I know is OMG SHOCKING but I do not think it is good writing at all. But at least I can legitimately tell people WHY I don't like them.)

[identity profile] zalixethbe.livejournal.com 2009-12-18 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that people who jump on bandwagons of loving/hating a franchise without actually knowing anything about it are generally very annoying. And I say this as someone who's been a fan of various big fads and popular franchises at times.

However, I don't mind the mindless hating of Twilight as much as other bandwagon-jumping behavior, because Twilight actually has objectionable content in my opinion. It's not just that it's poorly written and boring and lacks character development and a coherent plot and so on; or that SMeyer shoehorns in her opinions on sex, marriage, and babies. Those are some of the reasons that I don't enjoy the book, but it's not my job to go around telling people they can't like something just because it's what I deem to be subpar quality. But the underlying messages in Twilight really are very offensive to me, and I don't like seeing something like that gain momentum with impressionable young girls. Edward and Bella's relationship is extremely unhealthy, but in my experiences with young Twilight fans, very few of them seem to realize that. They want a boyfriend "just like Edward", which is alarming to me. It's the difference between reality and fantasy, but not in the obvious sense of "magic is not real", or "you do not have superpowers", which I think most kids do grasp pretty easily. This is more subtle than that- it's about the difference between what is acceptable in a dark romantic fantasy (stalking, overprotective behavior, isolation from friends and family, a partner who continually tells you they are dangerous, etc.) and what is acceptable in a real-life romantic relationship (none of the aforementioned). I'm sure there are lots of girls out there who do recognize that, but I also know that there are lots of girls who don't see that difference. And that worries me.

So for that reason, I don't mind seeing people turning against Twilight, really for whatever reason. I mean, I'd prefer that they understand the reasons I just mentioned, but really, the less publicity/money/hype the series receives is the better, in my opinion.

[identity profile] luisa-f.livejournal.com 2009-12-18 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't waste your time, hating Twilight is the cool thing to do right now, it gives people 'cred'. Personally, I find the obsession ridiculous. Jesus, haters just keep bringing it into any conversation even when it's not even marginally related to the topic at hand.

And the brainless bandwagoners will applaud anything that has Twilight hate included, every parody (even when they're less imaginative than the books they're mocking and not funny in the least). But hey, it's hatin' on Twilight so it's gotta be the funniest shit evah, right?

but there ARE reasons for hating twilight besides that it's popular. (although i'll admit, there are books/movies/what-have-you that are much worse than twilight, but are also properly obscure. i think twilight gets so much more hate directed to it because it is shitty AND popular).

but i've met people who have said "i loved the books, but then they got popular, so now i hate them!" which is bullshit.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2009-12-18 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
1. It's always been cool to hate things because they are popular. Always.
1a. It has also always been incredibly cool in fanboy culture to reflexively hate anything that teen girls like. See current Avatar v Titanic comparisons.

2. When things you don't like are popular you hate them more because they're harder to get away from and that makes you more resentful.

3. There are lots of reasons to legitimately hate Twilight.

I haven't read the books. I'm sure there are people who hate them for legitimate reasons, but whenever something gets popular like that there will always be people who hate them or hate them more because they're popular.

warning: nonsensical comment

[identity profile] vivi314.livejournal.com 2009-12-19 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
While there are lots of reasons to dislike the series, I know a good lot of friends who, like you, really like it. So I guess there are reasons to like it as well. Maybe all the hate is also because it's overrated, as in not awful, but getting way too much popularity for what the book is actually worth in terms of literary style, originality and messages behind it. Then again, none of us can have an objective point of view as all tastes and interpretation differ.
So honestly? IDK what to think of it, I mostly just don't care, and overall agree with one of your secret's points, which is that hating on Twilight because it's the new cool thing to do is, on many levels, lame. Also, it kind of backfires on the haters as well. If you hate it, don't scream about it 24/7 or it'll receive even more attention :V

[identity profile] schizophrenic0.livejournal.com 2009-12-19 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I find it funny that in your secret you complain about people judging you for liking Twilight, yet you then proceed to judge people for not liking Twilight. If you want others to respect your tastes, it would be helpful if you respected theirs as well.

I don't dislike Twilight because it's the popular thing to do (and I hate when people make that argument). I dislike it because it's poorly written and glorifies the wrong kinds of relationships.
