Don't know for sure, but I'm guessing: smut that's a lot like IKEA furniture. Generic, boring and cheaply made, and fits in almost any fandom if you plug in "X/Y" for character names.

It's particularly hilarious because of the comm's shrieking insistence on perfect Uhura "characterization" (read: giving her no flaws).

I've only read a few S/U fics (I've never been a part of the comm or anything), and I totally agree about Spock's characterization.
It's like they make him into this all-feeling guy who only shows all his true emotions to his one love Uhura. Seriously, WUT.

I agree. I don't read fics for the glorification of a particular pairing - I'll read anything, as long as it's got some quality. And most of the S/U fics are sadly lacking and in this regard, its rival K/S wins landslide.

I completely agree. I mean, I don't entirely dig the Spock/Uhura pairing generally, but it would still be nice to find some nice het porn for them. I HAVE found their pairing is done well in humorous situations, but that's about it.

Mreh. This secret seems to confirm the fears that have kept me away from delving even casually into the Spock/Uhura sect of the fandom. To be fair, Spock is too emotive in a whole lot of fanfic and it's probably hardly an S/U thing. But making Uhura a self-insert? Bleh. Bleh, bleh bleh.

LOLOL! I was going to make this same secret, OP but I cut them slack because I think many are new to fandom period.

Something about this pairing draws people to fandom! And that's extraordinary. Given that so many are new, people aren't doing that bad. Hell, I know even my fic sucks, for that reason. But it doesn't make it any less fun to write. :-)

My thoughts on S/U, let me show you them

I write for this pairing, and I totally agree with this secret*. I think it's because the only interaction between them we really get is under extremely stressful circumstances; Spock is more emotive than he would ever permit himself to be otherwise (whether or not that's IC is debatable), and Uhura's characterization is somewhat diminished because she's focusing mainly on helping her boyfriend survive a crisis (which, you know, makes perfect sense in context) - we just don't get to see her much as her own person, and therefore have to fill in the blanks ourselves. Which leads to wonky characterization and Mary-Sueization, as often happens in het pairings with desirable male characters. YMMV on this, of course.

And also what someone else upthread mentioned about a lot of the writers being new to fandom and fic in general. That definitely adds to it.

Yeah, I feel the same way.
Although, I did enjoy the S/U stuff written by this author (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/685828/outtabreath) over at fanfiction.net.
She writes with a fair bit of humor, and her Spock is very much in character (mandatory for me in ANY ST fic, or else I won't read it.)

There's good S/U fic on ff.net. It just usually doesn't get half the attention of the PWP, regardless of the quality of the porn and plotting or the syrupy OOC fluff.

I'd like to add that the S_U comm has been taken over by a very small handful of people who really need to cut down on posting. Seeing the same 2 or 3 people updating multiple fics every goddamn day for months is what drove me away. Good on them for being able to sustain such high-volume creativity, but would it kill them to dial it down a notch so other posts aren't buried?
