Is this from Through the Looking Glass or Winnie the Pooh? I can never remember. They're both so full of fluffy happy things as to be largely indistinguishable.

But yes, there's nothing the least bit creepy or creepy-subversive in those books. Nothing whatsoever! And anyone who disagrees with you is obviously touched in the head.

I don't think anyone will deny that the books do have some creepy stuff in them, but they still aren't anywhere near as bad as people make them out to be. Certainly not to the point where Burton or McGee or Švankmajer's versions are accurate representations of Wonderland, which is what a lot of people seem to think.

This secret is explicitly about people's opinions of the books not people thinking "dark Alice" adaptations are faithful, so yes, the OP is doing exactly what you're saying nobody would do. My point is a reasonable person could find them creepy. I didn't as a child, but as an adult rereading them I find bits of them unsettling. It's not nightmare fuel for me, but in a lot of ways the elements of madness are more unsettling than horror.
