alice in wonderland is one of my fave stories ever, but i can definitely see how some of the elements would be scary/creepy to others for a number of reasons. people have different triggers after all.

I found it a cute story, and I was expecting it to be creepy from all the adaptations.

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2009-12-23 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

My dad was TERRIFIED by it as a child and still refuses to watch anything based on it.

That level of fear about mere surrealism just seems to me to imply that you need therapy. Badly. I've never met anyone who was THAT scared of a G-rated story who didn't have some serious, literally crippling personal issues.

I didn't like it.

And on the subject of children's lit nightmare fuel: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory bugged me for months, along with Witches, BFG and most of Roald Dahl's books.

Since a lot of people don't read the books, they don't realize that the original stories aren't creepy. The scenarios kind of are, but they're written in such a way that it's really not that scary. At all.

I don't think it necessarily means there's something wrong with you if you find them creepy/scary, but I definitely don't think the books were ever intended to be that way. I feel that people just blow it way out of proportion. Sure, there were several pretty messed up adaptions, but the original novels were never THAT scary. Certainly not to the extent people make them out to be.

[identity profile] noforcenosound.livejournal.com 2009-12-23 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's cute and it was Baby's First Surrealism for me, so I like it. I hate the current trend of "Oh, Alice in Wonderland, how CREEPY and ALTERNATIVE" that seemed to start with the rediscovery of the disney film and especially with the new Tim Burton adaptation.

I don't know, I was never really creeped out by it myself, but I can see how some people would be. What annoys me is the way that everyone and their dog seems to want to do Dark and Creepy versions/adaptations of it these days. I mean, maybe that was fun once, but it's not cool or original or edgy anymore.

Hey, you can love something and still acknowledge that it's got unsettling elements. Your "srs bzns apparently" sounds like the "you think too much!" whine, which, lemme tell ya OP, is never attractive despite being the Little Black Dress of fandom defensiveness. But hey, haters gonna hate, so you have fun with that. In the meanwhile, me and the approximately seven million other people who enjoy this book on multiple levels are gonna be over here in the corner, chatting and meta-ing and having ourselves a sweet-ass time. Which, fortunately, is different from a sweet ass time. What a difference a hyphen makes.

[identity profile] vieillerie.livejournal.com 2009-12-23 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a tale. For children. Tales for children that are not moderately creepy just fail. I don't see what's so special or scary about this one.
As someone who likes these books quite a lot, I LOL at the wank they generate (liek ZOMG their so deep the metaphors are soooo amazing! ill be over there smoking a pipe and stroking my chin while i reflect on it!)

Is this from Through the Looking Glass or Winnie the Pooh? I can never remember. They're both so full of fluffy happy things as to be largely indistinguishable.

But yes, there's nothing the least bit creepy or creepy-subversive in those books. Nothing whatsoever! And anyone who disagrees with you is obviously touched in the head.

Well, aren't you so tough OP. I suppose I'll just be over here, being absolutely ridiculous and "wrong" because I find something different than you creepy. :l

I can see aspects of it being creepy more than scary. (I get creeped out by the weirdest things!) But what gets me is when people see it as "dark." It really wasn't meant to be.

You know, the only thing that even slightly disturbed me about Alice in Wonderland was the demise of the oysters in The Walrus and the Carpenter - and that was all set right when I found out about the extra stanzas where the ghosts of the oysters return for their revenge. In the rest of the books, Alice was never really scared or freaked out by anything she encountered, so it never struck me as scary, just pleasantly absurd. Although there are definitely parts that can be construed as creepy, there are just as many moments that are just whimsical and lovely - like the whole chapter about the Caucus Race, which I just adore.

OP

(Anonymous) 2009-12-24 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Rereading the secret, I worded it a lot more harshly than I intended. I was heavily jetlagged (13 hr time difference) when I wrote it, and what was meant as 'I honestly don't understand why anyone would find it creepy' came out as 'U R all stupidheads'. I feel like an enormous asshole.
I never found the books, the Disney movie, or any of the adaptations I saw creepy in any way. They always made perfect sense to me, and later in life the people I met didn't find the stories creepy either, so I assumed (wrongly) that everyone saw it as I did: a fun, surrealistic story. Then, with the Burton reimagining coming up and SyFy's miniseries, I came across tons of people talking about how the books scared them as children and all I could think was "What? How?"
TL;DR? I worded this extremely poorly, had different experiences, and I apologize

I don't find it scary or creepy. It's weird, but that's because it's a dream, and follows dream logic. I don't understand why it seems to attract so called "dark" adaptations, or why people insist it must have been written under the influence of drugs.

[identity profile] oltha_heri.livejournal.com 2009-12-24 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't find it creepy, but I did feel like I should have been terrified. Partially because I had it read to me, and my name is Alice and I was convinced it was going to happen to me... I was just kind of excited. I suppose I could see how people could be creeped or scared by the story, but the tone is such that I don't quite understand it.

I was never scared by it, but I've always really liked surrealism. I can understand why people would be creeped.

[identity profile] katerayearth.livejournal.com 2009-12-24 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
I don't find the books creepy either. Trippy, yes, and I love them to pieces, but I never thought they were creepy or scary.
The only Alice in wonderland thing that never fails to creep me out is the checkoslovakian movie adaptation "Neco z Alenky".

[identity profile] shiplizard.livejournal.com 2009-12-24 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, you can't blame people-- Carrol was better at uncanny imagery than many of the authors who wrote similarly fantastic stuff. I mean, yeah, Baum's world was weird, but it was a happy, socialist weird. Carrol's seemed more like 'I think this is how kids think.' That lack of rules can get to people, you know? No guarantees that it'll turn out nicely for anyone.
