You know, the only thing that even slightly disturbed me about Alice in Wonderland was the demise of the oysters in The Walrus and the Carpenter - and that was all set right when I found out about the extra stanzas where the ghosts of the oysters return for their revenge. In the rest of the books, Alice was never really scared or freaked out by anything she encountered, so it never struck me as scary, just pleasantly absurd. Although there are definitely parts that can be construed as creepy, there are just as many moments that are just whimsical and lovely - like the whole chapter about the Caucus Race, which I just adore.

You know, I couldn't agree more.

Many adaptations seem to make Alice into something of a wide-eyed, innocent victim, which would make the story darker - whereas she's actually more of a clever six-year old girl who might get surprised by many Wonderland features but takes the vast majority of it in stride. Like children often do - and like people tend to do in their dreams when they're not having nightmares. And it's not supposed to be a nightmare.

Alice is polite and often expresses herself meekly when the weird people around her seem to take affront at the silliest things - but that doesn't mean she's a helpless victim. She's just curious to learn more, and as a child of the Victorian era she knows you have to be patient and diplomatic with grown-ups.
