This is confusing. I get that there's still a small community or two left in the Myst Fandom, but... I thought Uru was dead already? Like... years ago dead and the player-run version never got off the ground. Did I miss something?

It's still trying to get off the ground!^^; And with the movie now semi-officially in the works, there's a little excitement for that, too.

Late to the party, but... I don't know what comms anon joined, the ones I found are still active and very much awesome. There's at least two major boards, the official MOUL forums and the movie blog. I wasn't searching hard.
And, while not very active, 1) given the source material's status, the very fact that the fandom is still alive is a marvel to behold and 2) the boards are always ready to ~~dissect~~ *cough* discuss any new input by members old and new. Even trite questions recently gave rise to interesting discussions. If people want to talk about Myst, there's still room to talk about Myst.

Aaaaaand... that 'metaphor for storytelling' that OP rants about was kinda dropped between Myst and Riven imho and, while certainly part of the series' appeal, it's not even one of its main themes nowadays. O_o And they're not pocket universes, jeez.

IDK. I want to be famous so I can guest spot on Doctor Who. Being on the muppets would probably rule the world as well. I can see that as a reason.

I didn't even know about any games or whatnot beyond Riven! My sister and I spent an entire summer playing the original... it's AWESOME. Please, someone, fill me in!

There is, there is. And it's a very patient, dedicated one^^ Long story short, the series goes like this:

Myst
Riven
Book of Atrus
Book of Ti'ana
Book of D'ni
Myst III Exile
Myst IV Revelation
Uru & its two lovely expansions To D'ni (free) and Path of the Shell (not)
Myst V End of Ages

The three books can be bought together as the Myst Reader and tell Atrus' background from birth to Myst Island, the Fall of D'ni which took place some 60 years before the first game (soon a major motion picture, hopefully) and a thingie that happened before Exile. Exile takes place 10 years after the first game (and manages to accomplish absolutely nothing and be awesome at it, it's like *jingle* Interlude! *jingle* we're now resuming our scheduled saga of epic proportions. Gotta love that). Revelation jumps another nine years and ends Atrus' and the Strangers' story (and someone else's as well, but I'm so not spoiling that for you).
Up till Revelation, most people now agree that the games are awesome. Get them and the books and, if you liked the first two, I think that you won't be disappointed.
Then there's Uru, and things get more... ah, complex. I'm head over heels for the game, but ymmv. Things get more grandiose and more vague and unfinished due to severe budget restraints. Cyan's vision was too much for them to handle. Some, like me, are still amazed by its raw power. Others are more saddened by what was meant to be but could not be. Others, understandably, don't like the radical changes. I think that its very concept is too cool to be spoiled, but answer here or PM me and I'll be glad to fill you in on whatever's left. End of Ages is, uhm, narratively challenged and basically Uru's third expansion in the shape of a Myst game, but it's got guts.
