I don't think it makes someone BORING, just not that creative.

*ducks*

You have different system for the determination of creative merit than I do.

Well, might not have been the best choice of word. Maybe not creative so much as imaginative. Being able to see past the obvious. But hey, I think everyone should ship what moves them and just enjoy it! :)

Hrm. I read fics with both canon and non-canon couples and I still feel like I disagree with the idea that non-canon ship writers (or their fics) are inherently more imaginative than their canon counter-parts.

A story's imagination does not, to me, come from which couple it follows (if there is one at all), but how its writer constructs the characters, their worlds, the plot, the sentences, etc.

I can see where you're coming from, but I can't follow you.

For me, it's like coloring inside the lines if you just ship canon pairings. Yes, it's a pre-made cat. You may make the cat green or blue or grey, but it's still using the lines you're given. (Of course, I sort of feel the same way about people who only ship the main fanon pairing if there is one. Oh, you ship John/Rodney? Ooooh, what a rebel! It's the same follow-the-herd mentality. No offense to those shippers intended.) It's possible to be creative when coloring inside the lines, but at the end of the day if you try to hang your coloring book page beside someone's freehand people are going to give you odd looks.

Now it is possible to take your coloring book page and cut it up, transfer it to another medium, and actually do something creative with it. But most people don't.

But then again my very favorite fics are one where I look at the pairing and go "Oh no way would that work" and the author convinces me that yeah, yeah it can work and work well and why did I never see how perfect they were before.

And if you draw the cat, but from a different angle so you see the tension you didn't see from the front and also what the cat is looking at? Is that boring and unimaginative and herd-mentality-ish?

Or you draw the cat, but put it in a spacesuit on a background with exploding spaceships.

Or the cat is normal colored, but the fifteen cats around it are green.

You can make the pairing the entire story, or you can use the pairing to tell another story.

The point? Is over here, and you are somewhere past Saturn. If you're drawing freehand you are not coloring inside given lines.

I can understand where you're coming from, and I greatly appreciate that "coloring inside the lines" comparison because it helps me understand the other side. But, for someone like me whose first fandom was a huge one and has not been in any fandom since, the idea of taking noncanon ships seriously was foreign until then. I did a meme a while back and pretty much all of my favorite pairings were at least hinted at or touched upon in canon, even if they weren't actually canon. So I guess, to me, it's usually a stretch to ship anything that isn't in canon (even though I shipped exclusively noncanon and popular fanon in that one fandom.) If I like two people together, I'm not going to search around for someone "different" for either. I'm old-fashioned that way, I suppose, but I don't think it makes me boring to like two people who are developed as a couple. And usually, if a love triangle goes the way I don't like, I'm not happy, but I have a hard time continuing to ship in the noncanon favor. It just feels wrong, like I'm making them unfaithful. I just sort of pretend the change never happened and the love triangle is still in effect, or sigh and pity the character I preferred.

Then again, I don't try to see romantic relationships between people if at all possible, unless the canon is so devoid of romance that any shipping at all becomes a "what's the weirdest crack pairing we can think of?" contest. That's fun.

Wow, I ranted there. I'm not sure if a point is in there somewhere, but feel free to look for one.
