I think it's probably just a reaction to the ugliness that happened in some corners of the fandom. It's unfortunate that we can't get to a moderate middle place about it.

That said, I don't know if "doesn't matter" is the wording I'd use, since for both of them canonically their heritage is very important to them. Maybe it doesn't mean the same thing, or have the same symbolism. And I don't think it's so bad that it means something to some people in our time, given that Star Trek is a cultural product of our time, and therefore it's meaningful.

Nope, I'd never heard of it until this secret. I'm a member of spock_uhura but I don't really watch it.

Anyway, I don't know why thinking that someone's culture is important to them is such a strange thing to say?
