I think it's probably just a reaction to the ugliness that happened in some corners of the fandom. It's unfortunate that we can't get to a moderate middle place about it.

That said, I don't know if "doesn't matter" is the wording I'd use, since for both of them canonically their heritage is very important to them. Maybe it doesn't mean the same thing, or have the same symbolism. And I don't think it's so bad that it means something to some people in our time, given that Star Trek is a cultural product of our time, and therefore it's meaningful.

a) I've not met anyone for whom that is the *only* reason. b) How do you know it means nothing to them? Racism probably has affected them, given that they are from different planets and Spock is the first Vulcan in Star fleet and of mixed parentage. And we simply don't know how Uhura feels about her own heritage and history. Trek itself has addressed the issue of 20/21st Century racism, so canonically it's not something people are ignorant of. c) As someone says above me, real people's feelings are a bit more important.

I'm not into Spock/Uhura, and obviously don't belong to the community you mention, so i don't know the situation first-hand. But, if I understood well what you mean here, that people like Uhura and her relationship with Spock only because she is black or turn everything into a racism-discussion... well then, I understand if you are sad or disappointed. Getting too serious about certain subjects in fandom can screw up the fun, and it kind of sounds like it isn't Uhura what they really like, and more like they would like anyone who is black and hooks up with a non-black lead. That's kind of sad and disrespectful for the character you like so much, me thinks :( Also, if it is really like that, then I'd say their behavior is also racist, only in a different way than what we usually think as racism.

Why not try to join other comm? Surely there must be other S/U comms out there that are more lighthearted and really into Uhura's characters and not just "the black woman"? hope you find one, good luck with that :)

What I've seen on that comm is people talking about how much they love the character (for a huge variety of reasons, might I add), and - on a completely different note - analyzing her role as one of the few three-dimensional black heroines in sci-fi. The two topics often intersect, because this is a group of people who enjoys looking at the fandom from both an in-universe perspective and from a modern-day perspective. There is nothing wrong with that. I can tell, OP, that you'd rather focus on the in-universe perspective ("it's of some importance to us here but it means nothing to them") and that's fine, too. Maybe make your own community where meta isn't allowed, or read spock_uhura for the fic and not the discussion posts.

Also, what is with the whole "Spock is actually a green alien" argument? He's played by a white man. End of story. The race-oriented discussion about the Spock/Uhura relationship has to do with what we 21^st century viewers perceive, not with what the characters in the Trek universe think about it. Kirk's just jealous of the both of them anyway.
