I vote that nitpicking be abandoned altogether, writers focus on getting character voices down and unless you're writing the whole story in a character's voice, American, British, Australian, what have you, narration be left alone. Because it's fanfiction.

TL;DR, color and colour mean the same thing, as long as the character from Illinois isn't claiming to be bloody pissed, who gives a shit?

Spelling shouldn't make a difference, but a character in a UK fandom going to pick up a pair of pants when it's trousers would take me right out of the fic. The same for a US fandom were a character thinking another had a nice arse or something similar.

That reminds me of an otherwise decent Supernatural fic I was reading once where all of a sudden Dean was taking off his vest and trousers. I lost it and couldn't stop laughing and had to close the fic. If I'm reading in a British fandom I'll kinda switch over to thinking about the different terminologies and I don't even really register a difference. For the most part. But when things like that happen in an American fandom I just suddenly have an image of Dean wearing a leather vest with like fringes or something and a pair of tweed pants.

I may blink at kerb, but it's not a big deal. Dean on the other hand is never ever going to refer to his jeans as trousers.

Yeah see I'm British, but that would pull me out of it because I know it's wrong, and it's not what the character would think. The only time it'd work would be if it were from the POV of a Brit.

I've never written anything in a US fandom, but if I did I'd definitely get an American to beta the language and slang just in case anything slipped up, just the same as I have American friends that frequently ask me questions about Brit terminology.

The thing is it's an ongoing process. You're never going to learn all the differences because a lot of them are little things you'd never think to ask about. It wasn't until I got a beta back once that I learned counter tops=workspaces. I had no clue.

Or, amusing story, I just recently learned that pot plants=plants in pots, usually found in offices (we call them potted plants as pot plants are something completely different). Before that I thought one NCIS:LA writer was having a very amusing spelling error.

But, yeah, there are the big things. I'm not going to write in a British fandom and start talking about pants unless I mean underwear. And the big things are relatively easy to figure out just by talking to people.

See a lot of the problem is that things can be subjective too, because counter tops=/=workspaces to my mind. Same goes for pot plant. I'd never call it that, in fact I actually assumed that was an Americanism. Things can be regional or just differ in opinion. But that's often when you're getting into the more detailed things.

But the very fact that you can' always know is exactly why I would get a story like that beta read for language. I think it'd be ridiculous not to, really.

No, in America if you're saying pot plant you mean marijuana.

Regional differences are so much fun. I mean the old 'duck, duck, grey duck' vs 'duck, duck, goose' never gets old. Most regional differences are things you'd just never think of asking about too.

Betas are fantastic. [livejournal.com profile] multinationbeta is awesome too and I wish it got more recognition.

IDK, I think it's just as jarring to see the wrong words and phrases in a story written in 3rd limited as it is in one written in the 1st person, or in dialogue. It might not bother you but it will throw some people right out of the story.

Agreed. It could work with omniscient 3rd or when the narrator is a different character from the ones in the story, but how common is that in fanfic, the vast majority of fanfic is written in 3rd person limited (and if not that, then 1st or 2nd person)?

"Because it's fanfiction" is a lousy argument. The fact that it's fanfiction doesn't mean it shouldn't be good. I've read fanfic that it's way better than a lot of published stuff out there.
