I agree anon — either everyone should let the linguistics slide, or there ought to be equal opportunity picking.

I think that sounds perfectly reasonable, and I'm surprised to hear such a double-standard exists. It's not an attitude I've seen in any of my fellow British writers. I'll keep my 'u's and 'ise's when writing in an American fandom, but I'd never have an American wearing trousers, saying 'arse' or leaning on the bonnet of a car.

[identity profile] welovethelegend.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I never knew there was double standards. As a British writer for an American fandom, I keep my spelling but I always use Americanisms, such as 'pants' instead of 'trousers' or 'ass' instead of 'arse'. Obviously I can't catch everything, but if someone pointed something out to me that doesn't seem right to them, I'd be more than happy to change it. I wouldn't get mad.

[identity profile] weinende-rot.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I never knew about double-standards. Yeah, it's pretty annoying.

[identity profile] kitty-wake.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I have never heard of this particular double-standard. I imagine I hang out in the wrong fandoms.

[identity profile] iiiskaaa.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Makes sense to me.

[identity profile] aldehyde.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
i wasn't aware of this double standard. i absolutely agree with you.

I vote that nitpicking be abandoned altogether, writers focus on getting character voices down and unless you're writing the whole story in a character's voice, American, British, Australian, what have you, narration be left alone. Because it's fanfiction.

TL;DR, color and colour mean the same thing, as long as the character from Illinois isn't claiming to be bloody pissed, who gives a shit?

[identity profile] iceandlime.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Spelling shouldn't make a difference, but a character in a UK fandom going to pick up a pair of pants when it's trousers would take me right out of the fic. The same for a US fandom were a character thinking another had a nice arse or something similar.

IDK, I think it's just as jarring to see the wrong words and phrases in a story written in 3rd limited as it is in one written in the 1st person, or in dialogue. It might not bother you but it will throw some people right out of the story.

"Because it's fanfiction" is a lousy argument. The fact that it's fanfiction doesn't mean it shouldn't be good. I've read fanfic that it's way better than a lot of published stuff out there.

[identity profile] phaetonschariot.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I had no idea you weren't allowed to point mistakes out to Brits.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-11 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen British authors get angry when someone points out that the Supernatural boys wouldn't think of the Impala as having a boot, or that (somewhat more obscure) the American POV character wouldn't contrast "Asian OC" and "Chinese OC" when the character described as "Asian" was descended from Pakistani immigrants. But said authors also got mad when people pointed out typos and such, so...

This. If you're writing for a show or movie or anything set in a different country, at least *try* to make it sound real. Nothing puts me out of a fic like seeing an American who we *know* to say 'mom' calling their mother (or anyone else's) 'mum'; or talk about the boot of a car or going to the shops or putting on their Wellies. An attempt is all that's required, but a lot of people don't.

(A lot of others do, though, which I appreciate. Sometimes it's just a little thing that tips me off, like spelling. Which I'd never ask anyone to change, even if it is weird reading about kerbs.)

[identity profile] julia-here.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, usually spelling isn't a problem, although last night I was reading a fic where a car-crazy American's inner conversation included multiple instances of the word "tyre" and it got to me after a while.

[identity profile] hologrphcbuddha.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, never noticed this in any of my fandoms before, but if it is true, IA, anon.

[identity profile] karaokegal.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Perfectly reasonable. I'm an equal bitch on both sides of the equation.

[identity profile] x-saria.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-12 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
I've been bitched out for offering american-picking in an american fandom. Seeing "torch" and "trousers" instead of "flashlight" and "pants" for two very clearly american characters turned me off the fics, even though they were otherwise fantastic.

No matter which way you're going, you should *try* to write in the dialect of the original source. I wouldn't dream of writing things any other way.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-12 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
This. Either way, it should be fair. I was in a British fandom that was very aggressive about Brit-picking, and vocal about not wanting Americans there. This was after years in misc American fandoms, and being relaxed about "America-picking", which I never even heard of until the last year. I thought everyone has their own thing, and language is always changing anyway. Dogma equals death and all that. Plus, it's cool that someone's interested and goes out of their way. It's rude to make them feel uncomfortable. It was upsetting to not get the same understanding. I won't get rude about America-picking, but I'll never join another British fandom either.

[identity profile] doh-rae-me.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree anon.

It's not just in fandoms either. I roleplay with some friends, a few of them British. Their characters are supposed to be American, but every time they write the word "whilst", particularly when the character speaks the word and it isn't used in narration, it yanks me right out of the action and it's hard to think of the characters as anything but British.

You know, the number of people who have commented 'I wasn't aware of this double standard' ought to be a clue. There are LOTS of us Brits who make sure that we get it as right as possible when we're writing in American fandoms and change things we/betas may have spotted.

I just read a good handful of fics for Yuletide including Jeeves and Wooster, Georgette Heyer and Patrick O'Brian stories and others and guess what? Several of them were obviously written by Americans who were using turns of phrase that are just not British. Did I wish they hadn't? Yes. Did I get pissy about it? No.

So I suppose what I'm saying is a) it works both ways and b) the 'double standard' is a whole lot less prevalent than you think. Try hanging out in some different fandoms.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, I'm wondering if the OP is just RUDE about it. Because I've offered corrections when I've seen Brit-isms before in American fandoms...and even in fandoms which have a reputation for bad behaviour, I've NEVER had anyone be less than gracious about it.

[identity profile] hermione-vader.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh God, I agree with this so hard. When we point their mistakes out, they justify everything like crazy (when I say that in America, it's a "flashlight," not a "torch" and that's what I'm used to, and that's what should be used in an American fandom, I'm out of line).

Once, on [Unknown site tag], some British person was complaining that Americans were writing about bagger-boys/girls in a British grocery store, and apparently, they don't have people who bag your purchases for you in Europe. I didn't know that, but I don't know if the ranter realized how commonplace they are in America---I've had a couple of cousins and several classmates who held those jobs for at least a year. It's a typical job to hold in high school.

TL; DR: It goes both ways, Britpickers.
