(no subject)

New poll (as the other was misleading for some) after taking what everyone had to say into account. Some things have changed:

The grouping will only be for the big fandoms, if it happens i.e. if there are more than 5 secrets of the same fandom in the same day's batch. So if there were 20 Doctor Who secrets, they would be grouped together. If there were 4 Supernatural secrets, they would be kept random.

The rest of the post would be random as usual, so the randomness would never be completely lost.

The secrets will continue to be picked in random order from the week's batch.

[Poll #1511296]

THANK YOU for even giving us the choice! I know grouping is more work for you. I voted yes because I personally hate having to see SPN secrets, and being able to scroll past all at one go is really great.

I like the idea, but it seems like a lot of work for you guys.

It's probably more inconvenient for you guys to group the secrets than it is for us to scroll past them.

Is this going to be rigged again?

Like the last poll where some people voted in multiple accounts?

Make a sockpuppet?

It's not like you're defenseless.

People had multiple accounts voting for the last poll? The one with the dance troup as an option?!?!?

I like the grouping, but I'm sure it's a horrific amount of work. So whatever.

I just hope that you have relief workers lined up for when you need a week off from doing this. Or a built in hiatus for yourself or something.

I voted yes, but what I really mean is that I think you should do it a little while longer, and then have a poll again, so that everyone can see how grouping works for them. (If it only happens once, there's kinda the novelty factor skewing the 'experience'.)

[identity profile] crucioveritas.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
I hate having to scroll through endless crap about Wincest/Super natural... So yes please?

[identity profile] mlady-rebecca.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
No. When you hit a block of secrets you're not interested in, it's more of a pain to scroll by them.

Yes to grouping, if only because every time I see a Supernatural secret, it makes me die a little inside.

But, if grouping occurs, with the grouped secrets appear at the start or the end of the post? I don't know how others feel, but it's always been kinda disappointing to think you've got a fairly decent number of secrets still to read only to find its all a mass of the same exact fandom that you have less than no interest in.

Whatever the decision is, though, the comm will remain awesome, without doubts.

Yes. I think we've had enough SPN secrets already.

[identity profile] kizna1200.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
idk, I did like the grouping thing when I saw it in the secret posts, but I tend to just scroll past secrets for fandoms I don't care about anyway. It does seem lke a lot of work for you though if it is decided to group them all.

[identity profile] belledewinter.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be reading all of them anyway, sometimes a secret that's not even related to a fandom of yours can be hilarious. (And I'm looking at that one with Dr Who cursing Perry the Platypus.)

[identity profile] aishiterux.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm all for this. Being able to skip all Dr. Who secrets in one was great.

Nope, for me part of the fun is ooh, what fandom's coming next? Will I know it? Will I want to? Since I'm mainly in huge & really really tiny fandoms, grouping would spoil it for me.

[identity profile] flutingfrenzy.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, BUT I think the threshold should be higher than 5. Like, at least 10.

Edit: Also, I agree with what someone said above, that you should try it for awhile and then poll everyone again.

I vote no, because I while I do on principle scroll past secrets for fandoms I don't like, I sometimes decide that 'Oh hey that looks cool,' and read it anyways- something I know I wouldn't do anymore if they were grouped. And I just like have everything mixed up together. If we start putting the big fandoms in one pile you sort of lose that diversity and what not between fandoms. It's like "Lots of little fandoms," "Supernatural," "Dr. Who," etc. etc. It's just nice to have it all together.

HOWEVER, it really is up to you, in the end. But if you do have the groupings, I would rather it be for a larger number- like seven or ten or something. I think that if it's just five you'll end up grouping a lot of them.

I don't care... but I really hate seeing how many people think I shouldn't make secrets just because they have to do with Doctor Who :( I had no idea so many people thought that way about us. I don't really read the Supernatural secrets or the anime secrets whatever (because I don't understand what they're talking about cuz I know nothing about the canon... not cuz I'm 'sick of seeing that fandom' or anything), but I'd never say that I hate seeing a lot of secrets about it or something... I'm sorry I'm a part of a large fandom? Doesn't mean my secrets are any less valid... but it makes me sad to know that so many people just see what I've got to say/admit as 'just another boring Doctor Who secret, STFU already' and scroll on by. It's not my fault the fandom is so damn big! Maybe it's big because it's a good show?

[identity profile] luna-hoshino.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not that people think that secrets shouldn't be made, it's that it gets annoying when you have 5+ secrets all saying basically the same thing for ANY fandom. At that point, it's really not a secret if a whole bunch of people feel the same way.

not the same person,

(Anonymous) 2010-01-15 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
But grouping secrets doesn't take in to account what the secrets say only what fandom the secret is in. For example, someone could be saying that they think they're Ianto's pet dog or something and it would not be the same thing as the 6 other secrets about how people are depressed that Ianto's wearing blue, but it would be grouped among them.

Also, people can't predict or know how common an opinion is and it shouldn't even matter if they could. This is fandom secrets, not fandom minority. For example, it's a secret for one person to like slash (because they're in a religious or conservative community or whatever reason) while others may think it's very common and not something that should be made secret at all. There was a secret the other day about how someone didn't consider having a fandom a secret and then finding out how they couldn't be completely honest about their fandom opinions. It's all perspective really.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-14 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Not only should you group the secrets, you should also mark the beginning of a group so we can see immediately when we can stop scrolling down(or start paying closer attention, depending on your interests). I like how it's worked so far!

[identity profile] humbuggirl.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. I love the idea of being able to skip past the big fandoms that I have no interest in. A lot of the time it's people repeating the same stuff anyway. I also like the idea of being able to skip to the big fandoms that I like reading about.

People miss out in grouping

(Anonymous) 2010-01-15 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes a secret may be related to a large fandom, but is actually a more universal secret and people miss out that way. For example, what about a Dollhouse secret (in a mass of Dollhouse secrets) that was actually about feminism in fandom?

Also, what if a secret referenced an obscure fandom and a large fandom? Would it be grouped with the larger fandom anyways or be considered a small fandom secret?

It's just my opinion that grouping things together means making a distinction between secrets that isn't always easy to make. I think that a lot of secrets would get unfairly disregarded just based on the fact that they're in a grouping of other secrets.
