OH NO YOU DIDN'T

[identity profile] duckgirlie.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of agree. I liked Harris to begin with, but I could never really picture him running around, and Dumbledore charges about a fair bit after the first two books.

[identity profile] quinnzel.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually liked Richard Harris, but I will agree that I prefer Gambon.

[identity profile] threepwillow.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
FUCK YEAH MICHAEL GAMBON. Seriously, out of all the HP-related arguments that one of my friends repeatedly tries to trap me in, this is the one that will inevitably make me rise to the bait almost every time. She has the biggest hate-on for Gambon's Dumbledore; I think he's been acting the part beautifully, and combined with good writing/direction has totally perfectly balanced the ~ohoho eccentric~ with the kindly benevolent headmasterness with the "actually, I'm really not that nice and all-knowing of a guy." HATERS TO THE LEFT~

[identity profile] wrestlingdog.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to admit, Gambon's really grown on me in the last few movies. But he lacks the little glint in his eyes that I always associated Dumbledore with that Richard Harris was so good at.

If I could somehow combine the two, that would be my ideal Dumbledore.

Mmmmm...Personally I think that Harris and Gambon were perfect for the version of Dumbledore they played. The first two books, Dumbledore is more like a laid back and eternally wise hippy. But as the Voldemort arc heats up, he gets more and more kick ass. So yeah, Gambon was a better kick ass Dumbledore, and much better at the "greatest wizard in the world" title.

I adore Gambon's Dumbledore. That doesn't mean that Richard Harris's Dumbledore wasn't brilliant, but I just prefer Gambon's.

[identity profile] angathol.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Harris really nailed the "kindly old man" image at the beginning of the series. I miss him. ;_;

Agreed. Gambon did an excellent job, and his voice is perfect for it. Harris was frail from the start, even before he got ill.

[identity profile] iiiskaaa.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
IA. I thought Gambon was believable doing the little bit of action the role required. Harris just looked decrepit. He looked like Harry could have knocked him right over.

[identity profile] meganmurphy1977.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I do as well. Nothing against Richard Harris, but like those above have said, Gambon fits the more action-y Dumbledore of the films.

[identity profile] ninepointfivemm.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
SO agreed. Something always felt a little "off" when I watched the first two Harry Potters -- and the way Richard Harris just wheezed through the movies didn't help -- and then I read the 3rd/4th/5th book shortly after the 2nd movie came out on DVD. I decided that Dumbledore was a lot more irreverent than Harris made him out to be.

Personally, I would have loved to see Ian McKellen take a gander at Dumbledore, just to stick it to Richard Harris, but Michael Gambon is a lot closer to my image of Dumbledore than Harris is.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no, I see your point. :\ While Gambon is definitely too shouty, he does get his energy right and a lot of his quirks, at least in HBP ("that was fun!"). Sadly, I think Harris was too ill to really be all that spritely, but he did get the wise, kind thing down, IMO.

[identity profile] coeursansfoi.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with a part. Though I can't see Richard Harris' Dumbledore as one of the most powerful wizards of the world (unlike Michael Gambon's, who completely fits that image) his just goes better with the first movies. The others are darker and need another type of Dumbledore. One who can convince us he was manipulating everything since the beggining, who can convice us he was thirsty of power as much as Voldemort and Grindelwald. I can't see Harris in that part.

[identity profile] merrickm.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
In my head he's played by Tom Baker. Would have been perfect for the role and probably eager to be known for something other than the Doctor. . .

[identity profile] soarer-visions.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well, though Harris did seem too old and frail... I never liked Gambon. He just seemed far too rude and mean to be Dumbledore, you know? But that's just my two cents on the matter, nevermind me.

I love and loved Richard Harris but he did nothing for me as Dumbledore. He was too straight lace and frail. Gambon's Dumbledore is more of the powerful, whip smart loon that I had imagined. (Though between you and me, I would have gone with John Hurt. Yeah, I know he is already in the films. But he would have made a fantastic Dumbledore.)

[identity profile] ell-de-gothia.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Ever since Gambon found out Dumbledore's gay (last movie) I think he's playing him perfectly.

But I never liked Harris. He was too slow to be Dumbledore. And I'm kinda mad at him for being mean to Ian McKellen, he would have been an awesome Dumebledore as well.

[identity profile] ratatusk.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I've never really liked either of them in the role. I always pictured Dumbledore to be like Ian McKellen's Gandalf.

I don't like the way Gambon's Dumbledore is *written*, but I like him for Dumbledore anyway. He was a good choice, and more in keeping with what I see in my head when I read the books. Richard Harris sounded like he was at death's door, even before he actually was. Way too frail and definitely not enough pep to be dealing pleasantly but firmly (and cheekily) with everything he had to be dealing with.

[identity profile] arcadiaego.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. Fandom's justification for hating Gambon seems to be based on his delivery of one line, based on the number of times people post that damn cartoon. Also, the idea that Harris cared about the character/accuracy to the books is laughable. (Not that Gambon cares either, I'm sure.)
